Strong Bad’s Cool Game For Attractive People

April 13, 2008 | Leave a Comment

I thought that the new Final Fantasy game was the reason to get excited about WiiWare, but I was horribly mistaken. The key game I am now looking eagerly forward to is Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People from Tell Tale Games!

Now an important safety announcement:

Wii Sports Boxing, Meet The Z Cam

February 28, 2008 | Leave a Comment

This IGN video is a good taste of what the ZCam from 3DV Systems is all about. However, the videos on their site show the broad conceptual usage of such a device. Basically, this camera has full 3D sensing capability at 60 fps. Additionally, it has depth cut off, so you can configure it to ignore things beyond a certain depth of field.

Some big player will buy this company and their technology. The only question is who? Microsoft? Sony? Nintendo? Sony already has the Eye Toy, but this steps the game up to another level. Nintendo is clearly interested in innovative control with everything they are pushing both with the Wii and the DS. However, I think Microsoft will jump on this. The XBox has not dipped into this market yet at all. Plus, the videos show tons of Windows Vista applications and PC integration. I think this is an almost inevitable acquisition.

Guitar Hero III - Wii Replacement Disks

January 17, 2008 | 1 Comment

As awesome as Guitar Hero 3 for the Wii is… they accidentally released the game with mono sound. Apparently this was due to some screw up when the game master was made. Whatever the cause, Activision has stepped up:

From the Activision recall site:

As you know, some consumers have not been able to enjoy the full audio output of Dolby Pro Logic II on the Wii version of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. Activision is working with Nintendo to improve the audio experience and will be re-mastering the game. We will be offering Wii consumers who have Dolby capabilities free replacement discs in early 2008 once the discs become available. To pre-register for your free replacement disc, please fill out the following information. We will email you once the free replacement discs are available.

So if you have Guitar Hero III for Wii, I highly recommend getting your recall disk exchange.

Video Game Console Sales Charts

Video Game Chartz

As an avid fan of video games, I’m always curious about who is “winning” the console wars as far as sales go. The best I’ve seen is Video Game Chartz. You can quickly and easily see information like I have snapshotted above for overall console sales. You can also get specifics on game popularity and sales for all the major consoles.

At the moment we can see that Nintendo’s Wii is poised to cross Microsoft’s XBox 360 in sales very soon. Sony’s PS3 is certainly screwed though…

Wii Fit - Excercise… Fun… ?!?

July 11, 2007 | 5 Comments

Wii Sports meets Brain Age with a spin towards fitness. A few years ago, could anyone have predicted this would be Nintendo’s big announcement for E3 2007? OK, if yes, would you have predicted people would be excited about it, and that it looks like it will be an instant success? Yeah, me either.

Frankly, this looks fun. The fact that it will help keep me (and my family) fit is an unbelievably huge bonus for me. Truthfully, that could be enough to keep me playing a game for more than a couple weeks. I could actually see this extending into my normal daily life for a significant period of time.

From the Nintendo press release:

The active-play phenomenon started by Wii Sports now spreads to your whole body thanks to the pressure-sensitive Wii Balance Board (name not final), which comes packed with Wii Fit. The board is used for an extensive array of fun and dynamic activities, including aerobics, yoga, muscle stretches and games. Many of these activities focus towards providing a “core” workout, a popular exercise method that emphasizes slower, controlled motions. Family members will have fun staying active and talking about and comparing their results and progress on a new channel on the Wii Menu.

Manhunt 2 for Wii Trailer

April 16, 2007 | Leave a Comment

I was never excited about the original Manhunt game from Rockstar, but it got a lot of play in my house. For months this was the game of choice at lunch everyday for my friends. It is likely this was the most played game on our XBox.

With this in mind, I am reluctantly watching Manhunt 2 emerge for Nintendo Wii. I am particularly interested in the fact that Rockstar was willing to publish with Nintendo. This should go a long way towards getting them adult gamer respect.
