2006 World’s Ugliest Dog Contest

It is that time of year again, time for the 2006 Sonoma-Marin Fair World’s Ugliest Dog Contest in Petaluma, CA. As many know, Sam was crowned world’s ugliest dog the last two years. However, poor Sam past away on November 22nd.
This leaves the title wide open for a new ugly dog to try and fill Sam’s shoes. The fair is June 21-24, the ugly dog contest is on Friday June 23rd. I will post the results as soon as they become available.
Of potential interest is that Tator’s owner is Susan Newell who was Sam’s owner up until his death. Rascal was a previous winner of the “World’s Ugliest Dog” title, the only one of the group to ever hold the title. This in turn means Rascal is currently considered the “World’s Ugliest Living Dog”. Pee Wee, my personal choice, has been called “Son of Sam” by Newell on past occasions.
As of the posting of this article, Pee Wee and Munchkin are in a dead heat for the title.

Cyclops Kitten

I’ve been shown this poor little kitten a couple times now, so after feeling confident about it’s validity, I figured I should blog it…
According to some sources, the shortly lived kitten suffered from Cyclopia, a medical disorder characterized by the fusion of the orbits into a single cavity containing one eye.
Other places report that the cause was Holoprosencephaly, which causes facial deformities, according to the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the National Institutes of Health. In the worst cases, a single eye is located where the nose should be, according to the institute’s Web site.
Anyway, the common report from the AP provided by Yahoo news:
Cy, short for Cyclopes, a kitten born with only one eye and no nose, is shown in this photo provided by its owner in Redmond, Oregon, on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005. The kitten, a ragdoll breed, which died after living for one day, was one of two in the litter. Its sibling was born normal and healthy.
Traci Allen is keeping the kitten’s corpse in case science wants to research it. I wish they would so I could feel even more confident this poor thing is real… If so, maybe it would qualify as world’s ugliest cat!

World’s Ugliest Dog Dies at 14

Sam, the world’s ugliest dog, died today at the age of 14.
According to CNN’s article ‘Ugly dog’ Sam dies at 14:
At the time of his death, Sam was scheduled to be filmed for a Discovery Channel series on the world’s ugliest species.

Lockheed said she had Sam euthanized after a veterinarian told her Sam’s heart was failing.She said she’s felt a little lost ever since, and is sleeping with Sam’s favorite toy — a stuffed bear he picked up and carried home.
“I have snuggled Sam under my blankets on my bed for six years,” said Lockheed, who has three other dogs named TatorTot, TinkerBell and PixieNoodle.
I’m actually suprised to feel a bit sad about Sam’s passing. I originally posted about him because I was absolutely repulsed, but in the end my curiosity has warmed me to the creepy little fella. It will be interesting to see who the Sonoma-Marin Fair will crown ugliest next year. Stay tuned.

World’s Ugliest Dog

For three years running Sam has won the San Francisco Sonoma-Marin Fair’s“World’s Ugliest Dog” competition. I’ve been meaning to blog this ever since my father-in-law Brian showed it to me a week ago. The pictures really say it all. Is there a single endearing characteristic about this animal?
I searched around a lot, but could not find any of the runners-up out there. I have no doubt that this is undeniably the world’s ugliest. However, apparently his health is fading so I wonder what the competition will grace us with in years to come.
This UK site claims to have some ugly dogs, but they just don’t compare.
Well, anyway, here’s all the pictures I turned up of this handsome devil.

I invite anyone with complaints to come and see how absolutly adored and well cared for this dog is and to touch his leg and see how little it takes to get him snarly. One time, SAM came SCREAMING into the house dragging his back leg..I dropped the dish I was carrying and thought he had gotten out and been hit by a car or something. When I caught up with him in the bedroom he was looking back at his back leg and screaming and growling..WELL…there was a post-it note stuck on his rump..he had sat on it on the sofa and it stuck. The last thing in the world I would do is hurt SAM but it does NOT take much to get him growling//usually he just does it on his own anyway!
