Marvel Civil War Continues?!?
August 28, 2007 | 2 Comments

IGN posted this image today with a gigantic veil of secrecy. It’s drawn by Marko Djurdjevic, perhaps the hottest cover artist at Marvel right now… As soon as I looked him up, I realized he is the artist responsible for nearly every painted cover I’ve been in love with since December.
Anyway, from left to right this image includes: Sentinels, Cable, Wolverine, Thing, unknown #1, Ms Marvel, Cloak (without Dagger, WTF?), Captain America (who’s in the suit?), Iron Man, Thor, Hercules, Yellowjacket, unknown #2. I think I should know unknown #1. IGN makes a big deal about who unknown #2 is (the dude in the top right corner). If we knew who was writing this, we might be able to make a better guess. A Marvel.com article makes me wonder if this is Vulcan, but that’s a serious shot in the dark.
Many knock Civil War, but I haven’t felt the passion since that series ended. This has the potential to make me dig in with some serious Marvel induced excitement. Is this a one-shot? A new series? An alternate universe? What does it mean?!? I can’t wait to find out.

Fantastic Four: Animated Series
May 31, 2007 | 1 Comment
Marvel and Cartoon Network launched an animated Fantastic Four series last fall. The DVD of Season 1 has been released. Season 2 will start on June 16th.
I found the first season only mildly entertaining. The animation is relatively modern with an anime type style to it. I would assume this appeals to many brought up on Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc. The story lines are fairly involved and true to the characters and history of the Fantastic Four, the best part of the series. My biggest complaint, though, is with the voice acting. Specifically, Johnny Storm sounds like a complete idiot. Maybe it got better later in the season, I need to go back and watch…

Secret Wars
January 2, 2006 | 8 Comments
After reading and feeling somewhat letdown by House of M, I felt I needed to go back and read the granddaddy of all major company wide super hero crossovers, Secret Wars.
Secret Wars was a fairly revolutionary 12-issue series released in 1984 that existed as a limited series containing many of the most popular super heroes and super villains from the Marvel universe. This series at its conclusion has lasting impacts on the whole of the Marvel Universe. A new Spider-Woman (Julia Carpenter) is introduced, Colossus has an affair and breaks up with Shadowcat (Kitty Pride), She-Hulk takes Thing’s place on the Fantastic Four, a couple new villains are introduced, and most significant, Spider-Man gets the black suit.
The black suit is an alien symbiote which he brings back from Secret Wars after his original costume is destroyed in a battle. This suit eventually turns against him and bonds with Eddie Brock becoming Venom. One of the coolest and most popular of all Spider-Man villains. This has lasting impact in story lines even today as both Venom and various spawn/offspring pop-up in issues.
The story line is somewhat simple, not a lot of sub plot. However, I greatly respect the influence this 20+ year old series continues to have on modern Marvel comics.
A depressing thing I learned recently is that this series was created strictly to launch a super hero toy line for Mattel in case the He-Man toys suddenly tanked…
