Fantastic Four 2 Poster

This new poster for Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer came out this week. It shows Reed Richards, Ben Grimm, Johnny Storm, and Sue Storm standing in front with Silver Surfer flying in from the back ground.

It is definitely cool, but I like these two international posters better.

This one is simply the Silver Surfer bursting in on his surf board with the word RISE prominently displayed.

This other poster includes Sue Storm, The Invisible Woman (Jessica Alba) semi-transparent over the Fantastic Four logo with the tag line “They Will Return 2007″.

During Marvel Civil War, I really came to like the character of Sue. This has me additionally excited about this film. Hopefully the writers can capture the powerful character strengths I have recently come to appreciate.

Fantastic Four 2 Rise of the Silver Surfer: TV Spot

February 27, 2007 | 1 Comment

This sweet TV ad ran during Monday night’s Heroes episode. There are multiple indirect references to Galactus leading us to hope he will in fact make his debut in this film. I am now more excited about this movie than I ever would have expected.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer - First Silver Surfer Image

December 22, 2006 | 8 Comments

Silver Surfer

The first image of the Silver Surfer in the upcoming Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer was revealed today. This movie is a sequel to the partially successful Fantastic Four movie from the summer of 2005. Personally, I really enjoyed the first movie and have been eagerly awaiting this sequel.

The choice of the Silver Surfer and I would assume Galactus storyline was quite welcome. This is a story from Fantastic Four that is classic and core the the Marvel mythology.

From USA Today on the Silver Surfer:

With computer-generated imagery techniques similar to those used to create Gollum in The Lord of the Rings, the slippery Surfer, voiced by Doug Jones, “will look somewhere between gun metal and fluid metallics so you can see the body motion, the breathing, the muscle tone, the mood,” says Marvel Studios CEO Avi Arad.

The Surfer’s mood is key to the story. After striking a deal with the evil Galactus to save his planet, the once-human Surfer wreaks havoc throughout the cosmos. “He is a highly emotional being, trapped inside fluid metal,” Arad says.

As a side note, the first Fantastic Four trailer debuts tonight only in theaters with Night at the Museum. Hopefully the trailer extends to the Internet as a whole this weekend.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer hits theaters June 15th, 2006!

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

Silver Surfer

I didn’t used to be much of Fantastic Four fan. In fact, I watched the movie for the first time long after it had been out of theaters. However, my expectations were low and I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed this movie as a popcorn action, fun filled romp, with super heroes.

With this in mind I was actually happy a sequel was planned. I am even happier now knowing the title: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

The title is wonderfully along the same fun filled lines. Additionally, Jessica Alba had been hinting at a Silver Surfer appearance, it was great to see this come true. The real question now is what about Galactus?

GalactusFor those not familiar with back story, Silver Surfer first comes to Earth as the herald of Galactus. Galactus is a being of immeasurable power who consumes planets. In the original story he is only defeated when Silver Surfer switches sides and helps the Fantastic Four to defeat him. This is the classic Stan Lee/Jack Kirby story from the Marvel Universe. It defines epic in many ways with effects that are still felt in Marvel stories today.

Just coming off reading the Ultimate Galactus trilogy and the Last Planet Standing limited series, I am seriously pumped to see this story played out on the big screen. In fact, I’m antsy just to see the first trailer!

(Who’d have though I’d ever be excited about a Fantastic Four movie sequel?)

Marvel Ultimate Alliance

July 30, 2006 | 11 Comments

Marvel Ultimate Alliance comes out this fall for all major consoles from Activision. The game will feature 140 characters from the Marvel Universe. Most important to me, this game will be available on the Nintendo Wii.

Here is a great trailer from San Diego Comic Con:

This is an older trailer that’s been around for awhile:

This trailer outlines the basic plot lines and shows quite a few non-playable characters:

This game is a four player RPG from the makers of X-Men Legends 1 & 2. Arguably, those games aren’t fantastic, but they can be fun when played in a group. Being the major comic geek, specifically as relates to the Marvel Universe, I am really excited for this game. Combine that with the fact that I’ll be purchasing a Wii on launch day, this will certainly be one of my first games for the new console.

Currently announced characters include: Spider-Man, Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Thor, Blade, Elektra, Invisible Woman, Captain America, Human Torch, Iceman, The Thing, Dr. Strange, Nightcrawler, Nick Fury, Silver Surfer, Uatu, Lilandra, Dr. Doom, Black Bolt, Black Widow, Namor, Karnak, Corsair, Death Bird, Galactus, Heimdall, Professor Xavier, Scorpion, and more to come!

Marvel Podcasts

June 5, 2006 | 3 Comments

Marvel HeroesI am silly amounts of addicted to the Marvel Universe. As part of that I was pretty excited in January when I first discovered Marvel’s podcasts. Since then I have found myself waiting less than patiently for the semi-monthly or so releases. The insight into the authors, artists, and overall creative teams at Marvel has engrossed me even further into the Marvel Universe and the many exciting events that are currently taking place there.

The first one of these I casually listened to was with Damon Lindelof talking about Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk. Of course I have been rabidly following that series, at least for the first two issues. Where’s issue #3 Lindelof/Marvel?!?

Astonishing X-MenNext, I heard Joss Whedon talk about his Astonishing X-Men series, which I immediately sought out the trades and am now following monthly. In fact, if you want to get in on a modern X-Men title, this is the one to read. The team consists of Cyclops, Emma Frost, Kitty Pryde, Wolverine, Colossus, and Beast. The series has dealt with some fantastic plot twists and events, including a story line about a mutant cure whihc is eerily familiar to X-Men 3’s major plot line. Understanding Whedon’s reasoning for building the team he did and why he is playing with the stories he is made the whole experience that much richer.

Craig Kyle was interviewed about the Ultimate Avengers movie. After listening I of course bought the DVD on launch day. If I hadn’t heard him explain in great detail about why he had changed many of the major story elements, I may have been annoyed at the film. Instead I enjoyed every minute of it and again found insights into the changed characterizations.

Annihilation CoverI was surprised to find Keith Giffen and editor Andy Schmidt raising my interests for Annihilation and all the cosmic Marvel heroes featured there. I had previously had every intention of being blissfully ignorant of this major event which follows primarily characters I find out of place and uninteresting in Marvel. Instead, Silver Surfer, Drax the Destroyer, and Nova have all captivated me into this major event. In fact I’m trying to find back issues of Drax the Destroyer which are proving to be as elusive as honest politicians… Granted, I still find Ronan and Super Skrull about as boring as anything ever written… but you can’t win them all.

The X-Office episode was an amazing amount of fun to listen to, but I haven’t been able to find much that is too interesting in most the X-Men comics these days. The exception is of course Joss Whedon’s previously mentioned Astonishing X-Men. The banter between the many editors, writers, and artists who participated in this episode made for the occasional laugh out loud moment and definitely made a flight from Orlando to Manchester entirely more tolerable.

Civil War FrontlineThe two Civil War episodes added to my already frothing excitement for this event. In fact, I’m not sure anyone has ever felt so giddy about an upcoming set of comics as I do about Civil War. I just wish I could sit down and read the 30+ comics that will make up this massive event in one long binge. Alas, I will have to wait for Mark Millar to layout his tale slowly over the next six months…

I could go on, because there are more great episodes to highlight (Neil Gaiman on Moon Night, Ed Brubaker on Daredevil, Daniel Knauf on Iron Man, etc). However, I just need to say thanks to Marvel and hopefully encourage at least one person to listen to these amazing podcasts. I’m certain they will continue, especially if the marketing team learns how addictive they may prove to be.

I will warn you though, listening to the Marvel podcast will be hazardous to your wallet! You’ve been warned, now go listen and spend money on comics.
