Thomas Herbrich’s Interesting Photography

Thomas Herbrich creates some absolutely intriguing photos. On his site you can browse dozens of pictures that all make you think for at least a moment. Unfortunately there isn’t an ability to deep link to the photos I like the most, so I’ll just mention a couple. One of my absolute favorites is a guy who has climbed up on his desk, a sea of papers surrounds him, he looks frightened as a wave of papers approaches.
There are also two great animal related images I like. In one there is a silhouette of a giraffe being lead by a person across a bridge. Another similar one has a line of elephants crossing a high bride.
There is an entire gallery devoted to imagery of smoke. These high contrast images are all stunning.
My only complaint would be that the interface on the site is a bit annoying, but the photos are all so great, go look, if you like the one I’ve included here, you’re sure to find something that appeals to you.

Cyclops Kitten

I’ve been shown this poor little kitten a couple times now, so after feeling confident about it’s validity, I figured I should blog it…
According to some sources, the shortly lived kitten suffered from Cyclopia, a medical disorder characterized by the fusion of the orbits into a single cavity containing one eye.
Other places report that the cause was Holoprosencephaly, which causes facial deformities, according to the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the National Institutes of Health. In the worst cases, a single eye is located where the nose should be, according to the institute’s Web site.
Anyway, the common report from the AP provided by Yahoo news:
Cy, short for Cyclopes, a kitten born with only one eye and no nose, is shown in this photo provided by its owner in Redmond, Oregon, on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005. The kitten, a ragdoll breed, which died after living for one day, was one of two in the litter. Its sibling was born normal and healthy.
Traci Allen is keeping the kitten’s corpse in case science wants to research it. I wish they would so I could feel even more confident this poor thing is real… If so, maybe it would qualify as world’s ugliest cat!

Merged Photographs

I came across a great gallery titled “50 people see…” by brevity on the Flickr explore page.
The artist was not surprisingly influenced by Jason Salvon. I discovered his amazing Every Playboy Centerfold image about a month ago. It’s part of a larger series.
As a sidenote, I was exploring on Flickr in search of the Andy Rosen - “London Punks 1976 -1984″ gallery which was featured on Rocketboom. Another set of stunning images that are a must see. Which in turn led me to find a set of breathtaking black and whites of New York City in Hughes 500’s greyscale & Cutouts gallery.

San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo has definitely earned it’s reputation as one of the best zoos in the entire world. Zach and I spent last Friday wandering around the zoo and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Some of the animals were a little disappointing, like the giant pandas, who receive all kinds of hype, but aren’t really all that interesting to watch. Some of the other animals pleasantly surprised us though. The polar bear exhibit was quite good. The observation room was half under water and half above water. One polar bear in particular was extremely playful. We must have stood and watched that bear play with a large plastic toy (it looked like a 3 foot gray Tylenol pill) for 20 minutes. He swam and dove and tossed that toy all over the place. The entire crowd thought he was great. The tiger was another great exhibit because one of the tigers decided to pace directly in front of the observation window. We watched him for quite a while as well.
The zoo is enormous, and it was quite a challenge to find the best path through the zoo with a minimum of back-tracking. Unlike most zoos, the San Diego zoo is not set up so that you can just walk in a circle around and see everything.
So, if you ever find yourself in the San Diego area, reserve a day to treat yourself to the San Diego Zoo (and if you have time, take another day to check out the park that the zoo is in, Balboa Park - it’s got tons of museums and a botanical garden.)
