Iron Man Movie Trailer
September 11, 2007 | 4 Comments
The Iron Man trailer is out. You need to check it out! Below are my takeaways and highlights from the trailer. May 2nd, 2008 can’t come quick enough!

Tony Stark (played by Robert Downey Jr) in Afghanistan, before he is captured

The first Iron Man suit breaking out of prison

Obadiah Stane (played by Jeff Bridges) with his Iron Monger suiit

Iron Monger - the main villain

Jim Rhodes (played by Terrence Howard), best friend to Tony Stark. In conventional Iron Man history, Rhodes eventually dons the Iron Man costume and persona for a time. Later Stark goes back to being Iron Man and Rhodes becomes War Machine.

Virginia “Pepper” Potts (played by Gwyneth Paltrow) is the prime love interest of Tony Stark. Much like Money Penny to James Bond, Potts is Stark’s executive secretary. In comic mythology, she eventually marries Stark’s close friend Happy Hogan.

Tony Stark clearly displaying the device embedded in his chest. They must be using some of the Ultimate story line with this device being something to keep him alive…

Finally, Iron Man in the modern suit in flight
Visually I think they have nailed this. Additionally, Downey Jr seems to be spot on with his Stark portrayal. This is very exciting.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: Full Trailer
April 24, 2007 | 44 Comments
They appear to be hitting all the major plot points of the book nicely. Without a doubt this will be the most action packed of all the Harry Potter films. Umbridge is portrayed satisfactorily evil, Voldemort gets more presence, Dumbledore falls out of government favor, the Order of the Phoenix is formed, legilimency is introduced, Snape remains slimy, and Potter and friends get into more trouble.
July 13th will be a great day for Potter fans.
A big thanks to Jenny for passing this along!

Next - Another Philip K. Dick Story Turned Movie
April 16, 2007 | 2 Comments
Philip K Dick is maybe the most significant Sci-Fi author in the second half of last century. His stories of often center around varying perceptions of reality. This may be due to drugs, mental illness, or a science fiction plot device. Examples of modern films that are heavily influenced by Dick would include: Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Stranger Than Fiction, etc.
Additionally, there are a number of films directly based off of Dick’s work: Blade Runner (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep), Total Recall (We Can Remember It for You Wholesale), A Scanner Darkly (same title), Paycheck (same title), Minority Report (same title), etc. Most of these movies are not very good. Other than Blade Runner, none of them has garnered much critical acclaim. In most cases the director’s stray wildly away from Dick’s core plot points, merely retaining overall themes.
I would expect this new film, Next based off the short story “The Golden Man”, starring Nicolas Cage, Julianne Moore, and Jessica Beal to be similarly forgettable and poor. However, the fact that Dick’s name is attached to it, means I will pay it closer attention and certainly see it as soon as I have a chance. The trailer is certainly interesting. The movie is due out April 27th.
I hope someday Dick’s stories start to become amazing films. In the meantime, I highly recommend reading anything and everything Philip K. Dick wrote. I especially like his short stories, which in turn are often what become films.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer - First Silver Surfer Image
December 22, 2006 | 8 Comments

The first image of the Silver Surfer in the upcoming Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer was revealed today. This movie is a sequel to the partially successful Fantastic Four movie from the summer of 2005. Personally, I really enjoyed the first movie and have been eagerly awaiting this sequel.
The choice of the Silver Surfer and I would assume Galactus storyline was quite welcome. This is a story from Fantastic Four that is classic and core the the Marvel mythology.
From USA Today on the Silver Surfer:
With computer-generated imagery techniques similar to those used to create Gollum in The Lord of the Rings, the slippery Surfer, voiced by Doug Jones, “will look somewhere between gun metal and fluid metallics so you can see the body motion, the breathing, the muscle tone, the mood,” says Marvel Studios CEO Avi Arad.
The Surfer’s mood is key to the story. After striking a deal with the evil Galactus to save his planet, the once-human Surfer wreaks havoc throughout the cosmos. “He is a highly emotional being, trapped inside fluid metal,” Arad says.
As a side note, the first Fantastic Four trailer debuts tonight only in theaters with Night at the Museum. Hopefully the trailer extends to the Internet as a whole this weekend.
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer hits theaters June 15th, 2006!

Transformers Movie Trailer
December 20, 2006 | 5 Comments

Matt asked me earlier if I had heard about a new Transformers movie trailer, but I hadn’t. Moments later I noticed an email from Keith pointing out the trailer on Yahoo. In fact Keith also sent me along this great slew of Transformers movie pictures.
The teaser trailer did not reveal much, where this trailer gives us a much better feel for the movie. I gotta say, I like it.
There seems to be a pretty strong human component to this film which is important to me. Additionally, the trailer indicates a good strong amount of action. This is expected and welcome in a Michael Bay film (see Bad Boys). Finally, I really like how the transformers look. The special effects are spot on.
If I can convince Keith to throw his expertise at this, I’ll follow up with a scene by scene. Unfortunately I’m not knowledgeable enough to do it on my own. So… if you don’t see the follow up, blame Keith ;)

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: Teaser Trailer
November 27, 2006 | 12 Comments
Book five of the Harry Potter series, “The Order of the Phoenix” will hit theaters July 13th, 2007. I’ve been a huge fan of the Potter books since about the time Goblet of Fire came out. With each book the stories get darker and more exciting.
This trailer features Harry kissing Cho, Harry starts occlumency lessons with Snape, Umbridge and her education decrees, and the beginning formations of Dumbledore’s Army. If they can manage to fit all the appropriate plot lines into 2-3 hours of cinema, this will be a fantastic film. If they fail, we can all still read the book and listen to the audio book…
