Who is Ronin Now?

Ronin joined the New Avengers last year when she helped them out in Japan. It was later revealed that Ronin was in fact Maya Lopez formerly known as Echo. She was good friends with Matt Murdock, in fact they had a off an on relationship for awhile. Lopez was raised by Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin after he killed her father.
She was born deaf, but with the gift of being able to reproduce anything she saw anyone do. This includes playing the piano, fighting styles, flying planes, etc. It makes her a formidable opponent, especially if she has witnessed someone fight in the past.
After revealing herself to Captain America, Iron Man, and the rest of the New Avengers, she returned to Japan to infiltrate the organized crime group “The Hand”. When Civil War broke out shortly after, her contact with the Avengers was broken.
Following Civil War, she contacted Matt Murdock as she feared being captured or defeated by Elektra (leader of The Hand). He in turn told Iron Fist, who told the New Avengers she needed help.
By the time the new New Avengers arrived in Japan, Maya had been killed and resurrected by Elektra. Clearly Elektra intended to convert her to The Hand’s cause.
The interesting thing about all of this, Ronin arrived with the New Avengers. So the question is, who is Ronin now? Considering the fact that she contacted Murdock to help her, that’d be my initial guess. However… The picture to the right shows Maya and Ronin’s first interaction which seems to indicate this is not Matt…
The only other hints come from author Brian Michael Bendis in a Newsarama interview: “It’s someone with a long history in the Marvel Universe. There are quite a few people it could be, and it’s not necessarily the person you immediately go to, but it’s someone I have an affection for who also has a history of donning a guise that best suits his or her mental tone. And this is his or her mental tone right now. And it just so happens there is a costume that needs filling and a person who can fill it, and so it’s taken.”
If I was to take bets, these are the odds I’d give on who Ronin will turn out to be:

Avengers, New and Mighty

In the wake of Civil War, the Avengers are left split into two teams. These will be the New Avengers and the Mighty Avengers. Little is known about either, especially considering Civil War has not yet completed. However, the cover for Mighty Avengers has been revealed, and the first issue with the new New Avengers is out!
We do know that Brian Michael Bendis will be writing both books. Leinil Yu will be drawing New Avengers and Frank Cho will be drawing Mighty Avengers.
Here’s what the teams are looking like so far:

- Ronin - not Maya, so who’s Ronin? They imply it is “not quite” Matt Murdock. Could this be Nick Fury? Captain America? Sue Storm? Some other lesser known disenfranchised character?
I find the Mighty Avengers to be the more surprising of the teams. Lots of old characters being brought back to the main stream.
Early indications say that Mighty Avengers will be the more government acknowledged team addressing the massive universe effecting events.
New Avengers are a darker more street level team with a concentration on fighting crime. The art styles do a great job of immediately indicating that distinction as well.

Frank Miller’s 300 The Movie

It’s no secret that Frank Miller has created some of the greatest comics of all time. His runs on Daredevil and Batman reinvented these characters. In the case of Daredevil, he popularized this otherwise lackluster character. With Batman, he was able to shake 20 years of campy feel as a result of the 1960s TV show. Suddenly Batman was dark, gritty, and serious. These fantastic successes set Miller up to work independently in the 90s as a huge proponent of creator rights. During this era he created arguably his best work including Sin City and 300.
Sin City is the epitome of Millers film noir style and was a huge success when it was made into a movie last year. When I first saw the trailer, I began calling friends and making people watch it. The trailer alone was a fabulous work of art. I was just as pleased when I finally saw the film. I would count this as the greatest comic book movie of all time. Thankfully sequels are in the works.
This brings us to 300. Currently Zach Snyder is making this into a film due out March of 2007. 300 depicts the Battle of Thermopylae from the Persion-Greco war. The central character is Spartan King Leonidas who leads an army of 300 soldiers to defend against a much larger force of Persians.
The visual style shown in the trailer makes many scenes and characters look almost painted. I’m sure this is intentional to match the painted art from the comic. There is a definite epic war movie feel.
I wasn’t grabbed by this trailer anywhere near the way Sin City hooked me, but I’m still looking forward to this movie. Without a doubt it comes from the end of the best era in Miller’s career.

Ultimate Daredevil and Elektra

The more I read in the Ultimate ‘verse the more I realize how truly top shelf everything about it seems to be. So far every Ultimate book I’ve read has been great, in some cases awakening interest in characters I previously had no attachment with. Having this in mind, I picked up Ultimate Daredevil and Elektra.
This series starts as a four part series. It is extremely character central. There is very little classic bang up super fight action scenes, but that’s a-ok with me. Especially good when the character development and dialog is as expertly composed as this. In many ways I think this title was targeted at female comic readers, I hope it was successful at this, because I’m certainly going to be making Sara read it…
Here’s the premise: Elektra is a freshman in college. She is the child of a single father who started her with karate lessons at a very young age. Elektra is strong willed and outspoken. Her character exudes strength and confidence. In all ways a great role model for girls (at least early on). She shows up to school, meets some great friends, including one mousy shy girl who she protects from some frat dude jerk. This is where all the problems start, establishing the core conflict of the series.
Later we meet Matt Murdock aka Daredevil. In all ways Daredevil is secondary to Elektra in the series. He and best friend Foggy Nelson are studying law. Murdock immediately becomes Elektra’s love interest.
As the Elektra and frat boy conflict heightens in extremity, eventually she and Daredevil find themselves as a decision point. He must make a choice between supporting her in an act of vengeance or saving the life of someone he does not like. Daredevil feels strongly that the legal system must be played out; Elektra has lost her faith in the law.
In addition to Greg Rucka’s fantasticly written morality centered action character drama, the art of Salvador Larroca is stunning. In fact, it was the recent Marvel Spotlight: Neil Gaiman/Salvador Larroca issue that raised my awareness of this book. I enjoyed reading his interview, but hadn’t read anything he penciled.
If you are interested in Daredevil, Elektra, the Ultimate ‘verse, or character driven story telling, this is a must read for you.

Spider-Man Pewter Chess Set

SOTA Toys is releasing a $499 pewter Spider-Man themed chess set this August. I have to admit, the geek in me was intrigued… at first.
I really like the board itself. It’s themed like a rooftop in fairly ornate detail. This includes a non-flat surface creating a much more three dimensional and real experience. I was surprised to have not seen this idea sooner, it’s just brilliant.
The cast for pieces is good, at least on first glance:

This list is where I became frustrated. To begin with, why have both red & blue suit and black suit Spider-Man? What a terrible cop out. Let’s instead put Black Cat in that spot. Hell, if Spider-Man wasn’t also Peter Parker Black Cat would still be attached to Spidey. Alright, don’t like Black Cat? How about Spider-Girl? Or one of the three Spider-Woman characters? Surely any of these would be better. I’ve got no love for the clone-saga, but frankly I’d take Scarlet Spider over two Spider-Man’s on the chess board…
Next, what’s with Moon Knight?!? I suppose they fought alongside each other occasionally, but I’d much rather see Human Torch, Silver Sable, or even Firestar in this lineup. Cloak and Dagger seemed strange at first, until I realized they first appeared in a Spider-Man comic, leading me to accept them far more readily. The rest of the heroes are good choices.
On to the villains… this is a tough one. Spider-Man has one of the deepest rogue galleries of any super hero I’ve ever encountered. The ones chosen here are a solid list. At first I really wanted a female in the “Queen” slot, but as I poked around in my head, I couldn’t come up with an A-list (or even B-list) female villain for Spidey. Don’t get me wrong though, I’m not free of complaint when it comes to the villain list…
First off, we have Blade on the good side, but no Morbius on the bad? Who did Blade show up to fight? The dude kills vampires exclusively!
This lack of match-up has me concerned for Daredevil, Punisher, Black Cat, Cloak and Dagger, and Moon Knight. These guys all fight organized crime. That’s their shared niche and where Spidey teams up with this crew. Where are the major crime villains? Where’s Kingpin? Tombstone? Hammerhead? The Enforcers?
As I said before, there are a lot of villains, so I can understand them leaving some out. What I don’t get is why, knowing this, they would decide to make all the pawns the same? One or two unique spider-slayers is tolerable, but why not pull some other thugs up as pawns when you got all these other big names to choose from: Beetle, Chameleon, Carnage, Shocker, Hydro Man, Mysterio, Morbius, Man Wolf, Kraven the Hunter, Vulture, or Hobgoblin?
Back on the hero side, I’d love to see them use regular people, friends, and family as pawns instead of the lame spider tracers. For instance, take your pick from these: Mary Jane, J Jonah Jameson, Aunt May, Gwen Stacy, Betty Brant, Flash Thompson, Robbie Robertson, or Harry Osborn. Wouldn’t that be a lot more fun? Imagine having to sacrifice Gwen Stacy to take down the Green Goblin. It just begs to be setup this way!
In conclusion, with the stiff $499 price tag, they could have, should have, gone the extra mile to make this chess set irresistible to all fans. At this price they need to do something, their target market will all have similar complaints to mine… Save your money or buy more comics.

Real Life Daredevil - Ben Underwood

People recently reported on “The Boy Who Sees With Sound”. They compared him to dolphins and bats, but they missed the most obvious comparison… The is clearly a real life Daredevil!
OK, so he doesn’t have the cool red costume, he’s not a lawyer and he doesn’t appear to have an affinity for gymnastics, but other than that this kid is so entirely Daredevil.
The article describes how 14 year old Ben Underwood tragically lost his eyes to cancer at age 3. This barely slowed Underwood down. He learned at a young age how to make clicking sounds and hear where things are around him. His highly developed echolocation ability allows him to play baskeball, ride horses, roller blade, and even excel at PlayStation games! His ability is developed to the point where he can hear the difference between a truck and a car in a parking lot.
I’m telling you, if this kid decides to take up acrobatics he could totally become a costumed vigilante fighting for the justice of underdogs.

Marvel Podcasts

I am silly amounts of addicted to the Marvel Universe. As part of that I was pretty excited in January when I first discovered Marvel’s podcasts. Since then I have found myself waiting less than patiently for the semi-monthly or so releases. The insight into the authors, artists, and overall creative teams at Marvel has engrossed me even further into the Marvel Universe and the many exciting events that are currently taking place there.
The first one of these I casually listened to was with Damon Lindelof talking about Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk. Of course I have been rabidly following that series, at least for the first two issues. Where’s issue #3 Lindelof/Marvel?!?
Next, I heard Joss Whedon talk about his Astonishing X-Men series, which I immediately sought out the trades and am now following monthly. In fact, if you want to get in on a modern X-Men title, this is the one to read. The team consists of Cyclops, Emma Frost, Kitty Pryde, Wolverine, Colossus, and Beast. The series has dealt with some fantastic plot twists and events, including a story line about a mutant cure whihc is eerily familiar to X-Men 3’s major plot line. Understanding Whedon’s reasoning for building the team he did and why he is playing with the stories he is made the whole experience that much richer.
Craig Kyle was interviewed about the Ultimate Avengers movie. After listening I of course bought the DVD on launch day. If I hadn’t heard him explain in great detail about why he had changed many of the major story elements, I may have been annoyed at the film. Instead I enjoyed every minute of it and again found insights into the changed characterizations.
I was surprised to find Keith Giffen and editor Andy Schmidt raising my interests for Annihilation and all the cosmic Marvel heroes featured there. I had previously had every intention of being blissfully ignorant of this major event which follows primarily characters I find out of place and uninteresting in Marvel. Instead, Silver Surfer, Drax the Destroyer, and Nova have all captivated me into this major event. In fact I’m trying to find back issues of Drax the Destroyer which are proving to be as elusive as honest politicians… Granted, I still find Ronan and Super Skrull about as boring as anything ever written… but you can’t win them all.
The X-Office episode was an amazing amount of fun to listen to, but I haven’t been able to find much that is too interesting in most the X-Men comics these days. The exception is of course Joss Whedon’s previously mentioned Astonishing X-Men. The banter between the many editors, writers, and artists who participated in this episode made for the occasional laugh out loud moment and definitely made a flight from Orlando to Manchester entirely more tolerable.
The two Civil War episodes added to my already frothing excitement for this event. In fact, I’m not sure anyone has ever felt so giddy about an upcoming set of comics as I do about Civil War. I just wish I could sit down and read the 30+ comics that will make up this massive event in one long binge. Alas, I will have to wait for Mark Millar to layout his tale slowly over the next six months…
I could go on, because there are more great episodes to highlight (Neil Gaiman on Moon Night, Ed Brubaker on Daredevil, Daniel Knauf on Iron Man, etc). However, I just need to say thanks to Marvel and hopefully encourage at least one person to listen to these amazing podcasts. I’m certain they will continue, especially if the marketing team learns how addictive they may prove to be.
I will warn you though, listening to the Marvel podcast will be hazardous to your wallet! You’ve been warned, now go listen and spend money on comics.
