Video Game Console Sales Charts

Video Game Chartz

As an avid fan of video games, I’m always curious about who is “winning” the console wars as far as sales go. The best I’ve seen is Video Game Chartz. You can quickly and easily see information like I have snapshotted above for overall console sales. You can also get specifics on game popularity and sales for all the major consoles.

At the moment we can see that Nintendo’s Wii is poised to cross Microsoft’s XBox 360 in sales very soon. Sony’s PS3 is certainly screwed though…

Super Paper Mario For Wii

April 8, 2007 | 1 Comment

I really liked Paper Mario on the GameCube, though I was never able to complete it do to time conflicts… With that in mind I have been casually watching news about this version. IGN describes Super Paper Mario for Nintendo Wii as a 2D platformer, 3D adventure, with RPG elements mixed in. With that in mind, I watched the review above. Now I’m hooked. I will own this game, soon.

(Side note, IGN has embed-able video now! Welcome to the Web 2.0 game IGN!)

Create Your Mii!

November 28, 2006 | 14 Comments

Dee posted about this awesome flash based Mii creator that simulates the same functionality as the Mii creator on the new Nintendo Wii. Dee found this to create her own Mii after having enjoyed playing Wii Sports: Boxing at my house. Keep in mind Dee is one of the non-gamer types Nintendo is trying (and succeeding) to reach with this system.

I have to admit, I have spent an embarrassing amount of time playing with Mii characters. In fact, I have spent more time in there then I have on some of my games… With networked friends included, I now have 21 Mii on my system. I’m really hoping Nintendo and third party developers utilize this more frequently, like what is being done with Wii Sports. These simple caricatures add an additional level of fun and immersion that has been entirely unexpected to me.

On a sidenote… can we all agree that the plural of Wii or Mii is like the plural of deer? I think adding the ’s’ is cumbersome and dirty. I’m not the first one to make this observation (Sickr?), but I’d like to propagate it.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance

July 30, 2006 | 11 Comments

Marvel Ultimate Alliance comes out this fall for all major consoles from Activision. The game will feature 140 characters from the Marvel Universe. Most important to me, this game will be available on the Nintendo Wii.

Here is a great trailer from San Diego Comic Con:

This is an older trailer that’s been around for awhile:

This trailer outlines the basic plot lines and shows quite a few non-playable characters:

This game is a four player RPG from the makers of X-Men Legends 1 & 2. Arguably, those games aren’t fantastic, but they can be fun when played in a group. Being the major comic geek, specifically as relates to the Marvel Universe, I am really excited for this game. Combine that with the fact that I’ll be purchasing a Wii on launch day, this will certainly be one of my first games for the new console.

Currently announced characters include: Spider-Man, Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Thor, Blade, Elektra, Invisible Woman, Captain America, Human Torch, Iceman, The Thing, Dr. Strange, Nightcrawler, Nick Fury, Silver Surfer, Uatu, Lilandra, Dr. Doom, Black Bolt, Black Widow, Namor, Karnak, Corsair, Death Bird, Galactus, Heimdall, Professor Xavier, Scorpion, and more to come!

Nintendo Rules E3

May 14, 2006 | 9 Comments

While I got excited about a new Smash Brothers game, this was only the first in a series of things that excite me about Nintendo’s next generation console. Over the course of the show, The Big N showed why the Wii was once code named Revolution.

At one point during E3 the wait to get your hands on the Nintendo Wii reached 6 hours, while many said you could walk up and play the PS3 at any time. Much of this could be related to PS3’s extraordinary launch price ($499 or $599). Additionally, Sony’s announcement of adding tilt sensors to their controller seemed like last minute copy cating of Nintendo’s amazing new controller scheme. Additionally, game footage they showed did not look significantly better than Microsoft’s Xbox 360 games which have already hit the market. These things left PS3 the clear loser of E3.

As for Microsoft, they seemed to show some exciting new potential with their online services and integration with wireless devices. However, the potential for excitement here is less than with Nintendo primarily because there is still so much to learn about the Wii.

The clear confirming moment that indicated Nintendo’s victory was in Sony’s second idea theft, but this time they stole Microsoft’s idea. Peter Moore of Microsoft took a jab at PS3 by stating “They’re going to buy an Xbox and they’re going to buy a Wii… for the price of one PS3″. Later, PS3 executive Phil Harrison said to GamePro: “I think Nintendo will be the second system consumers purchase after PlayStation 3″.

This confirms one thing they both agree on, people will be buying Nintendo’s system, even if they may have the purchase order screwy, or I wonder, why bother with either Xbox or PS3?

Anyway, I’ll be keeping a close eye on what we can expect to see on launch day for the Wii. Since I’m compiling the info for myself from many new sources, I’ll happily share it with you here.

Nintendo Goes Wii

April 27, 2006 | 1 Comment

nintendo wiiI was simultaneously notified today of Nintendo announcing the official title of their next generation console by Tom, Adam, and Jon… Nintendo announced the change from codename Revolution to calling it Wii. Check out the announcement video on Rewired Mind.

Then read this explanation of the name from Nintendo:

Introducing … Wii.

As in “we.”

While the code-name “Revolution” expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer.

Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else.

Wii will put people more in touch with their games … and each other. But you’re probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like “we,” which emphasizes this console is for everyone.

Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

Wii has a distinctive “ii” spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play.

And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd.

So that’s Wii. But now Nintendo needs you.

Because, it’s really not about you or me.

It’s about Wii.

And together, Wii will change everything.

As for now, Nintendo.com has been /.’d, so you’ll have to try again later if you want to read what they have to say themselves.

Revolution Will Have 20+ Games at Launch

April 12, 2006 | 2 Comments

Mario With RevolutionNintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communications George Harrison confimed that there will be 20 games at launch of the next generation system currently codenamed Revolution. According to NintendoRevolution.ca, 1/3 of those games will be coming directly from Nintendo.

From Code Name Revolution 10 of those titles are rumored to be:

  • Red Steel from Ubisoft
  • Skatto Golf Pangya Revolution from Tecmo (only for Japan)
  • Call of Duty from Activision
  • Tony Hawk from Activision
  • Disney/Pixar’s Cars from THQ
  • Super Smash Bros. from Nintendo
  • Metroid Prime 3 from Nintendo
  • Unknown Shigeru Miyamoto game from Nintendo
  • Revolution version of Atlus’ Trauma Center
  • Unamed Midway-developed title

Harrison is further quoted as saying:

“The other thing we recognized is that you really make your reputation in the first year. You’ve got to deliver software, not just at launch, but you’ve got to deliver software in the first six to nine months after launch. It has to be solid software,” he commented. “In GameCube, we didn’t have that, we had kind of a drought for six months after it launched. By that time your reputation starts to solidify and it’s hard to reverse that after awhile.”

I’m sure more information will become available at E3 on May 9th.
