Bizarre Frozen Waves

The video quality here isn’t great, but what it captures is stunning. As the water in Newfoundland freezes and expands, it pushes up on shore in waves of ice. Fascinating.

The Amazing Screw-On Head

August 28, 2006 | Leave a Comment

Amazing Screw-On HeadI was surprised to find how much I enjoyed the movie Hellboy. It was not overly well received, but was entirely entertaining from my perspective. Since then, I’ve been lightly following Mike Mignola’s work. Frankly I need to read more of his comics… but my attention was caught when Keith told me about Sci-Fi’s The Amazing Screw-On Head.

The pilot is available on their site for free. The story is around Lincoln’s top spy, Screw-On Head (yes, that Lincoln). The plot of the pilot is summarized on the site:

When arch-fiend Emperor Zombie steals an artifact that will enable him to threaten all life on Earth, the task of stopping him is assigned to Screw-on Head. Fortunately, Screw-On Head is not alone on this perilous quest. He is aided by his multitalented manservant, Mr. Groin, and by his talking canine cohort, Mr. Dog.

Can this unorthodox trio stop Emperor Zombie in time? Does Screw-On Head have a body awesome enough to stop the horrors that have been unleashed? Where can we get a talking dog?

My reaction to the pilot, flippin’ bizarre. The humor is witty and all over the place. The animation appears to be ripped straight out of any of Mignola’s work. This show is entirely unique. This is not a show for everyone, but I think I’d quickly grow to love it. If you are up for 20 minutes of funny, bizarre and shocking, go watch the pilot and keep an eye out for a regular series on Sci-Fi.

Cyclops Kitten

January 22, 2006 | 55 Comments

I’ve been shown this poor little kitten a couple times now, so after feeling confident about it’s validity, I figured I should blog it…

According to some sources, the shortly lived kitten suffered from Cyclopia, a medical disorder characterized by the fusion of the orbits into a single cavity containing one eye.

Other places report that the cause was Holoprosencephaly, which causes facial deformities, according to the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the National Institutes of Health. In the worst cases, a single eye is located where the nose should be, according to the institute’s Web site.

Anyway, the common report from the AP provided by Yahoo news:

Cy, short for Cyclopes, a kitten born with only one eye and no nose, is shown in this photo provided by its owner in Redmond, Oregon, on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005. The kitten, a ragdoll breed, which died after living for one day, was one of two in the litter. Its sibling was born normal and healthy.

Traci Allen is keeping the kitten’s corpse in case science wants to research it. I wish they would so I could feel even more confident this poor thing is real… If so, maybe it would qualify as world’s ugliest cat!

Man Commits Suicide With Homemade Guillotine

January 4, 2006 | 11 Comments

I’m all for do-it-yourself projects, but this is ridiculous!

A guy in Belmont, NH built a homemade guillotine which he used to commit suicide. This guy was pretty serious though as he setup a fairly intricate “bomb” setup with 12-16 ounce bottles and gasoline as an apparent failsafe. According to descriptions, the device was intended to detonate using electricity. This “bomb” was built to burn down down the place, not for explosive purposes.

According to The Citizen:

[Belmont Police] found the man dead in what appeared to have been a homemade guillotine — a device designed to behead its victim.

Authorities said the man had been dead of the apparent suicide for some time.

… subsequent investigation turned up bottles of gasoline that had been placed into the walls of the home with electrical wires coming out of each — a discovery that prompted police to call the fire department.

Authorities cut power to the home after determining that the device inside was designed to detonate using electricity.

Of course Sara says this guy needs props for his creativity. She said “heck, they hardly ever put gunshots in the paper anymore!”
