Watchmen Trailer Available Early!
July 17, 2008 | 1 Comment
The Watchmen trailer is scheduled to debut in front of Batman: The Dark Knight during tonight’s midnight premier. However, the trailer has been released online ahead of time.
This is the movie of 2009. I’m not a huge DC fan and I have shockingly not yet read Watchmen. Yet, this is the most acclaimed and beloved graphic novel of all time. This is another Alan Moore creation (V for Vendetta) and in the hands of Zak Snyder (300) it should be both beautiful visually and deep in story.

Summer 2008 Movies
March 15, 2008 | 2 Comments
There is no doubt I am going to spend way too much money this summer if I see half the movies I’m excited about.
Here’s a chronological list of the goodness I’m paying attention to, it’s nearly every week:
Leatherheads - April 4th - So April isn’t summer… but the trio of Clooney, Krasinski and Zellweger looks spectacularly funny.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall - April 18th - One name, Kristen Bell. If you still have doubts, check the trailer.
Iron Man - May 2nd - Can’t miss this.
Speed Racer - May 9th - Visually exciting, mixed opinions on the Wachowski brothers after two crappy Matrix sequels…
Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian - May 16th - I didn’t love the first, but this looks a bit darker and more interesting to me.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - May 22nd - Another can’t miss. I hope this hold up to the originals.
Sex in the City - May 30th - I don’t care, but my wife could make this unavoidable…
You Don’t Mess With The Zohan - June 6th - Probably wait until this hits DVD, but I generally enjoy Adam Sandler. He hasn’t had a big hit lately, he’s do.
Kung Fu Panda - June 6th - Jack Black as a Dreamworks digitally animated panda? W00t.
The Incredible Hulk - June 13th - The first Hulk movie looked good, but lacked substance. Can Ed Norton put this franchise back on track? Loved the trailer, I’ll be there for this in the theater.
The Happening - June 13th - M. Night Shyamalan had 2 great movies, followed by three increasingly forgettable ones. Zooey Deschanel always intrigues me, but this will get a pass until it hits DVD.
Get Smart - June 20th - The classic TV series was great fun. Steve Carell is perfect for the part, let’s hope he does better with this than Will Farrell did with Bewitched…
Wanted - June 27th - Holy crap. I can’t begin to explain my excitement about Mark Millar’s creator owned book being made into an adrenaline pumping, full blown, summer popcorn flick. (plus Angelina Jolie) This year’s V for Vendetta or 300.
Wall-E - June 27th - If you want more family fare this weekend, Pixar rarely disappoints. (yeah… I hate Cars)
Hancock - July 2nd - Will Smith plays a not-so-super hero. Trailer was enough to get me excited.
Hell Boy II: The Golden Army - July 11th - I’ve been patiently waiting for this since credits rolled on the first film. Must see.
The Dark Knight - July 18th - If you have a pulse, you’ll be in line for this.
The X-Files 2 - July 25th - I’m happily shocked that this movie exists. I miss the X-Files so much…
Star Wars: Clone Wars - August 15th - This new animated adventure existing between Episodes 2 and 3 is flying shockingly far below the radar. I have a feeling this will be the greatest Star Wars movie since Return of the Jedi, but no one seems to be talking much about it…
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - November 21st - Not summer, but another blockbuster to look forward to in 2008.
If 1/3 of these are good, this could be a movie summer to remember. See you at the movies!

The Dark Knight: Full Trailer
December 17, 2007 | 1 Comment

The Dark Knight Trailer is now online in HD! they did an amazing job making the Joker scary amounts of crazy. Heath Ledger just might work out after all… Also, the addition of Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel Dawes (replacing the otherwise terrible Katie Holmes) is huge.
Christopher Nolan sure can make sweet dark films…

Grayson

Note, I recommend the High Res 60MB version of this if you are at all interested beyond the first 30 seconds. The YouTube version is here for the lazy and/or bandwidth challenged
A fan written script about a post Batman era Dick Grayson led to the creation of this trailer. The trailer is a bit long and pretty much tells the overall scope of the story. Batman is gone, but villains rise up again in his absence. Grayson re-dons the guise of Robin to fight crime in Gotham City once more. Cameo appearances come from Wonder Woman, Superman, Green Lantern, Batgirl and more.
In watching the trailer it’s obviously amateur in it’s portrayal of nearly the whole of the story in a fully linear manner. Trailers need to make you want to find out what happens and get excited about potential, I feel like I know way too much after watching this, but of course this can be forgiven as it seems unlikely this film will ever be produced in it’s entirety anyway… I didn’t read the script, so I’d hope it’s development is a touch more mature. I want to want more from this, but don’t…
I can partially understand the appeal of this as a popular internet phenomenon, it is good in a generally poor area of fan created action/adventure films.

Never Liked Wonder Woman Anyway…
February 4, 2007 | 5 Comments
Joss Whedon is officially no longer writing the script for the upcoming Wonder Woman movie.
Joss’ statement about parting ways:
We just saw different movies, and at the price range this kind of movie hangs in, that’s never gonna work. Non-sympatico. It happens all the time. I don’t think any of us expected it to this time, but it did. Everybody knows how long I was taking, what a struggle that script was, and though I felt good about what I was coming up with, it was never gonna be a simple slam-dunk.
I have to say, I love Joss, but I’m not a DC comics fan and especially uninterested in Wonder Woman. Don’t get me wrong, I love the female protagonist hero, I just think Wonder Woman is nearly as lame as Aquaman. Again though… if it’s DC, I only really care about Batman, Green Lantern, The Question, and Superman in the right doses. Admittedly… I usually enjoy the Justice League in general, but the individuals are less interesting. Back on topic though, I don’t think it matters who writes this movie, it has a high likelihood of being terrible.
Thanks to Jenny for the heads up on this.

Moon Knight TV Series Coming Soon
October 25, 2006 | 12 Comments

Marvel announced today a deal with No Equal Entertainment to create Marvel’s character Moon Knight as a television series. Moon Knight is not the most well known of Marvel’s heroes, but he certainly has the potential for development. After many short and semi-successful comic series going back to 1975. Moon Knight did not experience real success until the 80’s when he managed to sustain 60 issues or so.
I count Moon Knight amongst Marvel’s other 70’s era vigilantes who have seen medium success, more so in the 80’s to early 90’s. Each of these heroes is currently being explored and expanded in new series by Marvel currently. These heroes include: Ghost Rider, Iron Fist, Power Man, and Punisher.
Since most people aren’t familiar with MK, from the Wikipedia character analysis:
Moon Knight is often criticized as an ersatz Batman and the parallels are indeed apparent. Writer of the 2006 relaunch of Moon Knight, Charlie Huston, attempted to answer these criticisms in an interview with Comixfan. The interviewer noted that the comparison is not baseless, as both Moon Knight and the Dark Knight are wealthy, “normal” humans that use gadgetry to fight crime. Though not specifically mentioned by the interviewer, further comparisons may be drawn due to the two characters’ specialized vehicles, use of themes in their gadgets, and use of fear to aid their fight against the criminal element.
Huston, though he disagreed, accepted that the character may be a rip-off of Batman, but went on to contrast the two by noting in particular differences in origin, motives, and personality. “Bruce Wayne,” he said, “fights crime to avenge the murders of his parents,” whereas Moon Knight “beats up whoever has it coming because he believes he is the avatar of the Egyptian god of vengeance and it helps him to feel better about all the people he killed when he was a mercenary.” Thus, while Batman is motivated by vengeance for wrong done to his parents, Marc Spector primarily seeks redemption from crimes he committed in his mercenary past. Huston further notes that Bruce Wayne, Batman’s alterego, takes on other personalities merely to aid in his fight. However, Moon Knight has three alteregos which aid him as much in dealing with personal demons as fighting law-breakers, and which have taken a further psychological toll of causing multiple personality disorder.
I actually think Moon Knight has the potential to be developed into a useful TV franchise. Since few people are familiar with the character, he can be expanded and developed in whatever ways the writers want to take them. Additionally, with his Batman-like characterization, there is plenty to fall back on. Add to that the dark and twisted features mixed with the multiple personality stuff and suddenly this vigilante story can go mainstream.
With this in mind, I remain hopeful. I’ll be paying close attention to casting and hopefully No Equal Entertainment can pull off a hit TV show with this. Anything has to be better than the short lived Blade Series…
