Synergy is the best of it's kind. Simple, Fluid and light on the system.

Another (WINDOWS ONLY) alternative is Maxivista.

Maxivista is much heavier on your resources, but not only gives you all the features of Synergy (WINDOWS ONLY), but you can use up to three other machines as second monitors for the main machine. So 3 single monitor machines become 2 single monitor machines, and 1 three-screen beast!!! All controled with the same KB & Mouse. It also has a price tag. Where as Synergy is FREE!!!

I started with Maxivista, but now I use Synergy. I find it is very fluid and extremely versatile. It's perhapse not the most straight forward (although not TOO difficult) program to set up, but once running, needs no tweaking and just sits quietly in the sys tray.

Best open source app yet..? Quite possibly!!!

The fact that the machine sharing the keyboard and mouse is classed the server is the bit that confused me. It was just confusion over terminology (Maxivista is other way around!). If any noobs need help setting up, feel free to message me via my myspace on the link above and I help you out. Good Freeware Frickin' Rawks!

For Windows, check out http://www.maxivista.com

It does a very cool special trick additionally to the Synergy feature. Demo video: http://www.maxivista.com/demo.htm

[...] And…if what you really want to do is use and control a couple (or more) computers side by side, then what you might really want is some virtual KVM software (or, more properly, some keyboard and mouse-sharing software). Zach is super excited about Synergy for these things. [...]

[...] Without a doubt I think Mac OS X is by far the most modern and attractive looking OS in existence. Seeing it side by side with Windows XP every day shows how far ahead it was. Imagine my surprise upon discovering Uno’s ability to make it even better. [...]
