According to this advertisement I found in 1966′s Amazing Spider-Man #44, you could apparently buy a “darling monkey” for $18.95.
The ad goes on to say:

These YOUNG monkeys grow about 12 inches high. Eats same food as you do (even likes lollipops, simple to care for and train. FREE cage. Now I understand some strange stuff went on in the 60′s but selling baby monkeys to random comic reading kids is just plain terrible. In fact, “squirrel monkeys” are now listed on the endangered species list. Of course I’m completely ignoiring the seahorses advertised above, somehow that’s slightly less disturbing.

Evidently the price went down a bit – in Fantastic Four #15, the “Darling Pet Monkey” is advertised at $19.95. Hopefully not many kids had the money to purchase one, and those who asked their parents were refused. But you know some poor squirrel monkeys definitely went out. Incredible.

I remenber the year 1971,and I remenber this ad,my mom was showing us,all my sisters and brothers the ad,we were so excited,about 6 weeks later he arrived,he was the cutest little monkey you will ever see,and gentle,.that was better the best present I ever recieved, Tammy
Hi,It was true about the monkey we recieved,I lived in Alice Tx. at the time,I don’t know if my mom has pictures of it ,but I will check,it did look like the monkey on the Ad.It was a baby when we reicieved it,and it did get alot bigger,It was very scared at first,and then it got use to all the noise in the house,and it was a very loving pet,we had it for years but I dont remenber how long,It did eat on our hand,and it would make a noise like,eeeek,I dont remenber if it was a boy or a girl,and I dont remenber the name,I love animals,and I wish I could find another monkey,it never harmed us,infact I remenber it would kiss me,somehow it got outside and we found it a couple of days later,my mom said it was poisoned,she thought the neighbor did it,I remenber that because she cryed for weeks,infact I remenber my dad going to their house,I dont know what he said,but he was very upset.and now I think his name was CoCo,she came with instructions on how to feed her,and what to feed her.My parents thought us to love animals and made sure we took care of them,this brings backs so many memories,my Dad died four years ago,and I wouldn’t lie or tell you a story,this is the truth,I’ll even give you my moms #,you can ask her yourself. I bought one of those monkeys in 1964. Had it several years, and love it. It was a mess, and have many funny stories. But was a great pet and experience. Will never forget my monkey.
