MySQL Administration Tools
August 19, 2005
For the last five years or so I have been doing MySQL administration on various databases for various purposes. As part of that, I have become accustomed to using two tools primarily. First is the web based tool phpMyAdmin. This is by far the most all around useful tool.
However, if you do a lot of permissions management, you already know it is weak at handling this. It’s just all around cumbersome. This was OK though, because MySQL provided MySQL Control Center. Not a pretty application, but fast and simple when handling user management. But, this great tool was taken away from us. Sure it didn’t have a pretty interface, but it was functional. MySQL replaced it with two tools, MySQL Administrator and MySQL Query Browser. Suddenly two separate tools were needed to do what Control Center did before, and Administrator can’t handle permissions for crap. Just try it, you’ll want to claw your eyes out.
I had been keeping good old Control Center on my laptop at work until I recently got a new one. I figured I was out of luck and was going to have to just deal with it.
But… there is light at the end of the tunnel! At least one mirror site has not taken away Control Center. Go get it now before it is gone for good.
