Import Remote RSS in WordPress

// March 7th, 2006 // Technology Bits

WordPress MUThe delivered WordPress import utility for RSS is a little annoying in that it requires you to provide a file. Who actually downloads a copy of an RSS feed to their desktop?

Anyway, when we began alpha testing WordPress MU for deployment at Plymouth State, we realized we needed a version of the importer that would allow a user to simply give a URL of their RSS and have it work.

This is simply a modification of the existing RSS importer, a majority of the code is outwardly taken from that. This will work for both WordPress and WordPress MU.

Instructions:

  1. Download this PHP file.
  2. Drop it in your wp-admin/import/ directory.
  3. Go to the Import link in your admin interface.
  4. Celebrate!

Please use this plugin at your own risk, no warranties or guarantees are implied with usage!

    Is that really annoying enough a task (that each person has to do maybe once) that it warrants both script hacking and an entire blog post? Sure most people don’t save feeds on their desktop, but most people don’t memorize the url either. A user has to get their pointer on top of the RSS link, and from their it’s almost the same amount of work to copy the url to the clipboard or to save the file locally.

    Part of the problem is that when you view an RSS feed, if you have a reeder, you generally don’t get the straight XML. Also, I may be a freak, but I know the RSS URL for my site off the top of my head…

    Truthfully, we had 5 or so different people ask about this when testing. I then built it in like 10 minutes, it is a simple modification of the other one.

    The final straw for me posting it was John Martin asking for it, at that point I figured posting it here would allow him to have it as well as give me a place to find it if I accidently overwrite the other one on an upgrade…

    Not about the international sites, but I do wonder exactly how much attention you pay to emails that are suggesting possible featured videos. Especially after seeing a recently featured video that has been uploaded several times by other users over the course of a year or even more.
