Hey, thanks for posting this interesting article. I visited Rome one year ago, and I suppose I noticed the porphyry but did not know what I was seeing. It appears to be a reddish granite polished and smooth almost like a hard acrylic fiberglass or plastic. Today, I found this article because I was reading about the purple porphyry stones found near where I live on the California coast. The stones are agglomerated in pieces of ocean crust that got pushed up along the edge of the Pacific plate. Suddenly I drew the connection but never knew how rare such rock is.
