Blogging in the Classroom

// October 21st, 2008 // No Comments » // My Stuff

An NYU professor demanded that her journalism student not blog about class. This brings up some interesting questions and debate. Are conversations and discussions in classrooms private? Initially I would have thought “absolutely not, blogging is 100% OK from the classroom”.

After reading the article, the topic is much more grey. In my classroom, there really aren’t any topics that would be sensitive (I teach Web Programming). However, an ethics class could see students proposing opinions or debating ideas from tenuous positions that would they would either choose to be silent on or be greatly embarrassed if revealed publicly.

With all this in mind, I think NYU has the right policy and that is to allow the faculty member to decide for themselves on a class by class basis.

I will say though, that the specific instance in this article is much more black and white. This professor felt threatened and lashed out inappropriately. It did appear that her stance was softening a bit over time though. Good to see she has potential to learn…

Watchmen Trailer Available Early!

// July 17th, 2008 // 1 Comment » // My Stuff

The Watchmen trailer is scheduled to debut in front of Batman: The Dark Knight during tonight’s midnight premier. However, the trailer has been released online ahead of time.

This is the movie of 2009. I’m not a huge DC fan and I have shockingly not yet read Watchmen. Yet, this is the most acclaimed and beloved graphic novel of all time. This is another Alan Moore creation (V for Vendetta) and in the hands of Zak Snyder (300) it should be both beautiful visually and deep in story.

Bude’s Garage Band Jam

guitar.jpgA few years ago when I first got my G5 Mac and was playing around a lot with Garage Band. Bude got into it a bit and ripped out with this short little riff. It’s kind of cool and he asked me if I still had it this week, so here it is for all to enjoy.

Leinenkugel’s Sunset Wheat

// August 20th, 2007 // 3 Comments » // My Stuff

Leinenkugel's Sunset WheatLeinenkugel’s Sunset Wheat is an award winning spicy wheat beer. When enjoyed in my weizen glass the natural coriander and citrus flavors are very strong and enjoyable. This beer is brewed by the J. Leinenkugel Brewing Company in Chippewa Falls Wisconsin. The brewery dated back to 1867 through five generations of family ownership.

I highly recommend this beer. I wish I could get a hold of more from the Leinenkugel Brewing Company like the Apple Spice, Summer Shandy, Honey Weiss, Berry Weiss, Red, Creamy Dark, or the Bigg-Butt Dopplebock! Unfortunately Sunset Wheat is the only beer I can enjoy from them in my area.

Iron Man Movie Excitement

// April 30th, 2007 // No Comments » // My Stuff

Iron Man Movie PosterAs Spider-Man 3 prepares to hit theaters on Friday night kicking off the summer 2007 movies, I begin to look forward to the Marvel movies of summer 2008. Headlining those charts is the exciting Jon Favreau rendition of Iron Man.

Classically, Iron Man/Tony Stark has not been one of my favorite Marvel characters. However, 2005’s Orson Scott Card written Ultimate Iron Man series piqued my interest. Following this, the deep involvement in Spider-Man continuity. Peter befriends and relies on Tony Stark, moves into Avengers tower with Mary Jane and Aunt May. He then changes to the Iron Spidey costume. Eventually comes out in support of Stark’s Super Hero Registration Act initiative and reveals his identity. His stance changes in the long run as he defies Iron Man, goes underground and joins the resistance as part of the conclusion of Civil War. All this certainly puts Iron Man front and center in all my comic readings.

Of additional note, last winter’s Invincible Iron Man DVD, created by the same animation studio responsible for Ultimate Avengers and Ultimate Avengers 2 DVDs, was the best of the three.

With all this in mind, the star studded casting of Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Terrence Howard as good friend and coworker Jim Rhodes/War Machine, Gwyneth Paltrow as the love interest Viginia “Pepper” Potts, and Jeff Bridges as the apparent villain Obadiah Stane/Iron Monger is highly exciting.

I’m on the edge of my seat waiting for the first teaser trailer…

Emperor and Darth Vader Phone Call

// April 27th, 2007 // 1 Comment » // My Stuff

I saw this video a long time ago, but when Keith sent it to me this week, it became time to blog it…

Voiced by Seth McFarlane of Family Guy fame, the Emperor carries on a conversation with Darth Vader from his office on Coruscant. That conversation occurs right after the rebel alliance destroys the first death star. The Emperor is comically angry as he talks with Vader in a manner similar to how a couple modern teenagers may.

Very funny. Robot Chicken from Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim is an amazing segment that consistently produces sweet content like this.
