Mac OS X Start Up Keys

// November 29th, 2007 // 85 Comments » // Technology Bits

I often search around trying to find the various ways to boot OSX in a special sort of way. I’ve especially needed these sort of things lately, as I had a brand new hard drive die on me.

You can hold any of the following to access any of these special boot modes:

C – Boot from the internal optical drive (CD or DVD)
D – Boot the diagnostic volume of the install DVD
N – Start from the Network (NetBoot)
R – Force PowerBook screen reset
T – Boot into Firewire target disk mode
X – Reset startup disk selection and boot into Mac OS X Server
Shift – Boot into “Safe Boot” mode, which runs Disk First Aid. A reboot will be required afterward.
Option – Boot into “Startup Manager”
Mouse Button – Eject (internal) removable media
Command-S – Boot into Single User Mode (command line)
Command-V – Boot using “Verbose” mode (shows all kernel and startup console messages)
Command-Option-Shift-Delete – Bypass internal hard drive on boot and seek a different startup volume (such as a CD or external disk)
Command-Option-P-R – Reset Parameter RAM (PRAM) and non-volatile RAM (NVRAM)
Command-Option-O-F – Boot into “Open Firmware”

Rumor has it, firmware password protection can be removed by intalling or removing a stick of RAM, then zapping the PRAM three times in a row.

These bootup options were compiled from Apple and this blog.

Election 2008: Joe Biden

// November 26th, 2007 // 3 Comments » // Newsy Goodness

When I heard Senator Joe Biden would be in town, I knew I would have to see him, but my hopes were low.

Like Richardson, I had also seen him on the Daily Show, but this was a couple years ago. At that time I had him seriously pegged as a potential contender for the presidency. Yet as this campaign season progressed, he put his foot in his mouth a couple times and the media latched on to this pushing him further and further down the list. For me he had joined Mike Gravel and Dennis Kucinich as a long shot candidate.

Seeing Biden speak caused me to do a complete 180. Without question, Joe Biden has been pushed into his current position in the election by bad media coverage. I think this is unfair and dangerous. I passionately hope for Biden to find some momentum and begin to be mentioned alongside or above Clinton and Obama.

Biden is unbelievably strong on foreign policy. Where Richardson had good experience, Biden has that and more. He has even managed to get a bi-partisan non-binding agreement for a plan on how to succeed in Iraq passed in the Senate. This is a huge accomplishment, but better yet, he explained why a non-binding agreement was useful politically. Taking a complicated political maneuver like that and putting into useful understandable terms was great.

His plans for health care seemed reasonable and incremental. Rather than attack an overwhelmingly huge “universal health care” plan, he instead has broken it down into goals that can more easily and independently be accomplished. He also explains where he’ll find the funding for this initiative…

Along with that topic, as he talks it occurs to me that with every initiative and plan he talks about, he states an estimated cost and where he can find the money to fund it in the budget. This level of fiscal responsibility is refreshing.

This is certainly a candidate I can throw my full support behind. Sure he’s had a few controversial comments, but that bit of humanity doesn’t scare me. Down the road, this guy can talk the talk and walk the walk on all the issues.

Canon Rebel XTi

I finally got the digital SLR I’ve been desiring. In a sweet “black Friday” deal, I purchased the Canon Rebel XTi. This 10.1 megapixel camera came with 18-55mm lens and 75-300mm lenses. I also picked up a 2GB compact flash card to start with.

Now I need to get a ton of sweet accessories for additional fun: a camera bag, an extra battery, a wireless remote, a polarized filter, a separate “speedlite” flash, and more…

Hopefully I’ll have some cool pictures to share soon, though being the holiday season, I’ll primarily be taking family pictures initially.

Cat Man Do

Cliff shared this great animated cat video with me. The way animator Simon Tofield is able to capture such realistically entertaining cat behavior with such simple animation is spectacular. Tofield is an animator for Tandem Films, much of their other work is also entertaining. I really enjoyed Tofield’s tiger advertisement for Singapore Zoo and the extract from Flatworld makes me want to see the rest of that film.

Starburst – Berries and Cream

I may not love it enough to learn the dance, but this ad rules. Unfortunately, much like the “It’s a piece of cake to bake a pretty cake” I can’t get “berries and cream” out of my head!

Whedon Returns With “Dollhouse”

// November 3rd, 2007 // 1 Comment » // Fun Whatnot

Eliza DushkuOh hell yes! Joss Whedon is returning to TV next fall with a new show titled “Dollhouse” with co-producer and show’s star Eliza Dushku. Unfortunately, it’s Fox that has signed this deal with Whedon, but we’ll ignore that for the moment.

From the Variety article:

“Dollhouse” follows a top-secret world of people programmed with different personalities, abilities and memories depending on their mission.

After each assignment — which can be physical, romantic or even illegal — the characters have their memories wiped clean, and are sent back to a lab (dubbed the “Dollhouse”). Show centers on Dushku’s character, Echo, as she slowly begins to develop some self-awareness, which impacts her missions.

Currently Fox has signed for 7 episodes. They are intended to air in the Fall 2008 season. Unbelievably exciting.
