Massive Volcanic Eruption on Io

// June 11th, 2007 // No Comments » // Newsy Goodness

During a photographing of Jupiter’s ring, the New Horizon satellite captured the above sequence of images showing a massively spectacular volcanic eruption.

From the New Horizon site

This five-frame sequence of New Horizons images captures the giant plume from Io’s Tvashtar volcano. Snapped by the probe’s Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) as the spacecraft flew past Jupiter earlier this year, this first-ever “movie” of an Io plume clearly shows motion in the cloud of volcanic debris, which extends 330 kilometers (200 miles) above the moon’s surface. Only the upper part of the plume is visible from this vantage point – the plume’s source is 130 kilometers (80 miles) below the edge of Io’s disk, on the far side of the moon.

Doctor Strange Animated Movie

// June 11th, 2007 // No Comments » // Fun Whatnot

On August 14th Marvel releases the final feature film in the four movie deal that brought us Invincible Iron Man, Ultimate Avengers, and Ultimate Avengers 2. In general I have been a big fan of this set up movies. The animation style has been perfect and the story telling solid.

The above first look and the below trailer have me plenty intrigued by this movie. Doctor Strange is not a character that sticks out as an interesting character in the Marvel Universe for me. I have never explicitly read any Doctor Strange books, however, he has been placed in the New Avengers team. His presence there combined with his guest appearances in Ms. Marvel has generated some interest for me.

I’m hoping this will be the best of the four movies. Since Strange is the least commonly known story, my expectations are wide open.

Smash Brothers Controls

From the Official Super Smash Brothers: Brawl site comes an odd announcement about various supported control styles. It would appear that pretty much any available or imaginable controller will work. The question becomes which is most advantageous in which instances… Time will tell on that one.

DotA 6.44(b) Brings 6 New Heroes!

// June 8th, 2007 // 15 Comments » // Fun Whatnot

With the release of DotA 6.44 and the near immediate 6.44b bug release, comes six new heroes; three for Sentinel, three for Scourge. My personal favorite’s are Storm Spirit and Templar Assassin. My least favorite is Dark Seer, in fact, if anyone can explain a strategy for that character to become useful, I would love to hear it…

New DotA Heroes

Here’s a quick overview of the new heroes and their spells:

Raijin Thunderkeg – Storm Spirit
– Electric Rave: Transfers mana into pure electric current at a rapid rate, increasing the Storm Spirit’s attack speed by 20% for 6 mana per second.
– Barrier: Shields a target with Raijin’s discharged mana, resisting spell damage while under the effect. Lasts 20 seconds.
– Overload: Each successful attack builds up a static charge, eventually releasing in the form for an electrical burst. The burst deals damage and does a minor Purge-like effect to the attacked foe and nearby area.
– Lightning Grapple: Creates an electrical attraction between the Storm Spirit and a target area, pulling him and all nearby units to that point.

Huskar – Sacred Warrior
– Inner Vitality: Magically unlocks the potential regenerative power within a target unit, healing its life force based upon its primary attribute. If the target is below 40% health, it will regenerate faster. Heals 10(30)% of main attrib + 4hp regen per sec. Lasts 16 seconds.
– Burning Spear: Using his own life force to set them aflame, the Sacred Warrior can cause his spears to deal stackable damage over time as they impact the foe. Cannot cast if Huskar’s HP is lower than 100. Stacks up to 5 times. Lasts 6 seconds.
– Berserker`s Blood: Huskar feels each of his wounds and channels the pain, increasing attack speed and damage for each 7% missing health. 7 max bonuses. First bonus starts at full health.
– Life Break: Huskar reaches into the well of his own life force to potentially destroy an enemy. Huskar’s target takes damage equal to 40% of his HP. Slows target by 50% for 5 seconds. Huskar pays a certain percentage of his HP to cast this.

Lanaya – Templar Assassin
– Refraction: Manipulating psionic energy around herself granting a mystical refraction of light that protects her from external harm and giving her bonus damage for a limited number of instances. Lasts 20 seconds.
– Meld: The art of Shakuras allows Lanaya to conceal herself at any time of the day and strike from the shadows with her armor-shredding blades. Deals bonus damage and reduces enemy armor for 10 seconds.
– Psi Blades: Using her psionic powers, the Templar causes enemy units behind her target to feel the same pain as the target itself. This psionic power extends her attack range.
– Psionic Trap: Creates psionic traps on ground. When triggered, it will slow units within 400 range by 50% for 5 seconds.

Azgalor – Pit Lord
– Firestorm: Calls down 6 waves of fire that damage enemy units in an area. Each wave deals initial damage and then burns enemies for 2 seconds.
– Pit of Malice: A deadly pit is conjured at target location. Any unit that enters it becomes corrupted with malicious forces and are unable to move for some time.
– Expulsion: Ignites the rotten gases of corpses, detonating them to cause damage to any enemy within the explosion radius. Each explosion fuels another until there are no more corpses in the area. Does a ministun on damaged units.
– Dark Portal: Opens rifts that pass through the netherworld at his present position and a target position simultaneously. Heroes can walk back and forth through the gates to cross the distance between them in an instant by clicking on the center of it.

Dirge – Undying
– Raise Dead: Calls the Undying’s fellow zombies out of the earth to fight. Once a zombie attacks six times, another one will rise alongside it. When a zombie dies, its reanimating life force returns to Dirge, healing him by 50 hp. Lasts 30 seconds.
– Soul Rip: Redirects the flow of living energy through a target friend or foe, damaging them or healing them depending on how many unites are near it.
– Heartstopper Aura: The Dirge’s deathly air stills the hearts of his opponents, causing them to lose 1% of their max health over time.
– Plague: Infects the target with a plague. Reduces movement speed by 30% and amplifies incoming damage. Infects other units that come within range of a plagued unit.

Ish~kafel – Dark Seer
– Vacuum: Creates an abyss upon a chosen parameter, pulling in and damaging foes in the area.
– Ion Shell: Surrounds a target with energized spellwork, creating a shield that causes damage per second to enemy units who come in contact with it. Lasts 15 seconds
– Surge: Floods a target with excess power, removing most negative buffs from it and giving it maximum speed for brief period of time.
– Wall of Replica: Raises a wall out of pure mana across the landscape. Heroes who attempt to pass through it will have images of themselves emerge from the wall to serve under the Dark Seer until the wall’s duration is up. Images take 250% damage and deal 35%.

With these new editions, everything suddenly feels fresh and new in DotA land. New combinations and strategies emerge, reminding me why this is both the greatest Warcraft III mod and the most fun online game I have ever played.

Real Life Spider-Man – Alain Robert

// June 3rd, 2007 // 1 Comment » // Fun Whatnot, Newsy Goodness

Dee sent me along an article from the Boston Globe about Alain Robert. This self proclaimed “Spider-Man” has been climbing the world’s tallest buildings with no equipment or safety nets.

Most recently the 44-year-old climbed the 88-story Jin Mao Tower. He was up and down in a mere 90 minutes, upon reaching the ground, he was promptly arrested. The list of buildings and structures he has climbed is amazing, including: Golden Gate Bridge, Luxor Pyramid, Sears Tower, Empire State Building, Sydney Opera House, Petronas Twin Towers, Taipei 101, and more!

Alain Robert makes me think of real life Daredevil – Ben Underwood and the parkour stylings of David Belle.

Surprisingly, he isn’t alone in his passion for this type of behavior. The term for this is buildering or urban climbing, structuring, or stegophily. The activity first originated at Cambridge in the 1890’s with Geoffrey Winthrop Young and has just grown ever since. Its still very rare and Robert is certainly the current leader in this.

Fantastic Four: Animated Series

// June 1st, 2007 // 1 Comment » // Fun Whatnot

ff_charsMarvel and Cartoon Network launched an animated Fantastic Four series last fall. The DVD of Season 1 has been released. Season 2 will start on June 16th.

I found the first season only mildly entertaining. The animation is relatively modern with an anime type style to it. I would assume this appeals to many brought up on Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc. The story lines are fairly involved and true to the characters and history of the Fantastic Four, the best part of the series. My biggest complaint, though, is with the voice acting. Specifically, Johnny Storm sounds like a complete idiot. Maybe it got better later in the season, I need to go back and watch…
