New Robot Chicken: Star Wars

// May 29th, 2007 // 6 Comments » // Fun Whatnot

A Robot Chicken: Star Wars will premiere on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim on June 17th. This time it will be a full length episode, not merely a short. If the trailer and the previous shorts are any indication, this will be hilarious. I can’t wait!

Starcraft 2 Announced!

// May 22nd, 2007 // 2 Comments » // Fun Whatnot

Al threw me the heads up on Blizzard’s exciting announcement of Starcraft II. The home page of Blizzard says “Starcraft II: Hell, It’s About Time”.

It was nice that Blizzard chose to announce the game in Korea where Starcraft has remained one of the most significant games and cultural phenomenon’s. On that topic, check out Ctr-Alt-Del’s sweet comic.

Amazingly the announcement came with a surprising amount of game play footage. Below you can see the three part video footage IGN made available.

It appears that the three major races have returned: Protoss, Terran, and Zerg. At the moment all the footage and information centers around the Protoss race. Frankly, what they are showing is amazing. This looks to increase the number of controllable units, making for much more massive battles. Additionally, Blizzard is leveraging the 3D in interesting ways. Units can walk between the legs of others, showing off a more impressive sense of vertical scale.

This is the most exciting game announcement I could imagine. Now if we could only get a release date… I’m betting on Spring 2009.

Marvel vs DC

// May 15th, 2007 // 3 Comments » // Fun Whatnot

Matt showed me the first of these, but Keith let me know there is a whole series. In fact, they are up to seven now, two since the movie came out just a week ago.

Basically these are a series of video parodying the fantastic Mac vs PC ads, but instead it’s with Spider-Man and Superman representing Marvel and DC. They keep getting better throughout!

Hi, I’m a Marvel…and I’m a DC. (Mac PC Parody) #1

Hi, I’m a Marvel…and I’m a DC. (Mac PC Parody) #2 – 70’s and 80’s, Good Times

Hi, I’m a Marvel…and I’m a DC. (Mac PC Parody) #3 – It’s A Boy

Hi, I’m a Marvel…and I’m a DC. (Mac PC Parody) #4 – I Got a Rock

Hi, I’m a Marvel…and I’m Batman. (Mac/PC Parody)

Hi, I’m a Marvel…and I’m Batman. (Marvel/DC Parody) Part 2 – Movie Fallout

Hi, I’m a Marvel…and I’m a DC. (Mac PC Parody) #7 – Fathers Collide!

I can’t wait for more of these.

Dropkick Murphys Rock Plymouth

// May 12th, 2007 // No Comments » // Fun Whatnot

Dropkick MurphysThe Dropkick Murphys rocked Plymouth, NH at Plymouth State University’s annual Spring Fling concert. I personally discovered them in 2003 just after Blackout was released. I immediately fell in love with “The Dirty Glass”, but this is a band with more than one mere hit. On Blackout alone I love “Fields of Athenry”, “Gonna Be A Blackout Tonight”, and of course “Kiss Me, I’m Shitfaced”. I also recommend “The Spicy McHaggis Jig”, “Tessie”, “Walk Away”, “Sunshine Highway”, “Cadence to Arms”, “Bagpipes”, I could go on…

If you like punk rock, or more specifically Irish punk, you should check out the Dropkick Murphys. Rock with bagpipes can’t be beat!

Lil’ Bush

// May 12th, 2007 // 1 Comment » // Fun Whatnot

Amp’d Mobile ran a series of exclusive videos parodying our president as Lil’ Bush. They surround the character of Lil’ George with Lil’ Condi (Condoleeza Rice), Lil’ Rummy (Donald Rumsfeld), and Lil’ Cheney (Dick Cheney) and place them all together in elementary school.

In this first episode title “Hot Dog Day”, Lil’ George is mad about the removal of hot dogs from the school lunch menu, replaced with more diverse alternatives. Hilarity ensues as Lil’ George and company hold the school lunch crew hostage and torture them ala Abu Ghraib.

In this second episode, “Nukes”, Lil George goes to work with dad. He insults the french, demanding french fries and unleashes nuclear holocaust on the world in an attempt to attack his enemies. The enemies list includes: Lil John Keyy, Lil Kim Jong Ill, Lil Howie Dean, Lil Hillary, Lil, Hollywood, etc. Eventually his dad returns and decides joining in may be fun.

In the latest video, “Evolution”, Lil George decides learning is too hard and seeks a way out. He finds comfort in misinterpreting the Bible. He runs with this, eventually getting in an argument with God and locking Him out of the White House.

This is a great series that in turn has been green lit for at least 6 full length episodes on Comedy Central. “Lil’ Bush: Resident of the United States of America” debuts in all it’s controversial glory June 13th.

Dotster VPS Upgrade to PHP 5 and MySQL 5

// May 7th, 2007 // 9 Comments » // Technology Bits

I recently purchased a Dotster VPS and needed to get it upgraded to have PHP 5 and MySQL 5, rather than version 4 of both. These machines run CentOS, so the best plan was to use yum.

Unfortunately, yum is not installed initially, so the first step was to get and install all the prerequisites plus yum:

export MIRROR=http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/os/i386/CentOS/RPMS/
wget ${MIRROR}python-sqlite-1.1.7-1.2.i386.rpm
wget ${MIRROR}sqlite-3.3.3-1.2.i386.rpm
wget ${MIRROR}python-urlgrabber-2.9.8-2.noarch.rpm
wget ${MIRROR}python-elementtree-1.2.6-4.2.1.i386.rpm
wget ${MIRROR}yum-2.4.3-1.c4.noarch.rpm rpm -Uhv python-elementtree-1.2.6-4.2.1.i386.rpm
rpm -Uhv python-urlgrabber-2.9.8-2.noarch.rpm
rpm -Uhv sqlite-3.3.3-1.2.i386.rpm
rpm -Uhv python-sqlite-1.1.7-1.2.i386.rpm
rpm -Uvh yum-2.4.3-1.c4.noarch.rpm

Once that is in place, you need to enable CentOS Plus. Go into /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo and under [centosplus] change “enabled=0″ to “enabled=1″.

Now you can simply execute ‘yum update’ and it should install both MySQL 5 and PHP 5 with all the necessary prerequisites (plus a number of other things…)

Update: A few other things to do:

  • Remove /etc/php.d/ioncube-loader.ini This file will cause weirdness with PHP and throw “Failed loading /usr/lib/php4/php_ioncube_loader_lin_4.3.so: /usr/lib/php4/php_ioncube_loader_lin_4.3.so: undefined symbol: zend_hash_add_or_update” in /var/log/httpd/error_log

  • Change php.ini memory_limit to be increased from the default of 8M, I recommend at least 32MB

  • Tune your MaxClients setting in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf I couldn’t begin to make a recommendation here…

Do this at your own risk, this could mess up your entire system. Be sure to have a good backup before starting this process.
