Spider-Man 3: Collectible Action Figures

Black Spider-Man FigureRed and Blue Spider-Man FigureVenum Figure

Keith and Alan pointed me at these soon to be released (Q1 2007) action figures. They are being created by Medicom Toy and distributed by Sideshow Collectibles. Due to their collectible nature, I don’t expect them to be commonly available or affordable. It looks like the pricing will be in the >$100 range for the fully pose-able 12″ figures.

The one feature I think is most cool about these is the way they have made a jointed figure and then put a stretchy plastic like material over the character as the suit. This hides all the joint mechanics creating a far more seamless action figure. My main criticism of these would be Venom’s face. Something about the distortion of it bothers me…

I’m really looking forward to seeing what the lineup of kid targeted action figures for Spider-Man 3 will be!

Best Practices for Applying AJAX to JSR 168 Portlets

// January 12th, 2007 // No Comments » // Technology Bits

At Plymouth State University we are just beginning to look into JSR 168 portlets for our institution’s portal. This technology for creating channels is just becoming available with the impending release of Luminis IV in Q1 of this year. In doing my initial research on JSR 168, I turned up this interesting article from Greg Ziebold and Marina Sum written in September of 2006.

From the summary/overview:

A year ago, the article Asynchronous Rendering of Portlet Content With AJAX Technology demonstrated how to apply Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX) to portlets. Since then, AJAX has become increasingly popular in the software arena and many new AJAX technologies have emerged. Examples are JavaScript libraries and toolkits, such as the Dojo Toolkit, the Yahoo! UI Library, the Google Web Toolkit, Script.aculo.us, and DHTML Goodies. In addition, new standards bodies like Open AJAX and the Dojo Foundation are key players.

In light of the many developments in the past year and the host of feedback on how to use AJAX in portlets, this article describes several helpful tips and practices on how best to exploit AJAX in portlets that comply with the Java Specification Request (JSR) 168: Portlet Specification.

The article refers to an updated version of the sample, AJAX Portlet Invoice Viewer, from the original article. You can download the binary Web archive (WAR) file. In the near future, this sample will reside in the Open Source Portlet Repository on java.net.

As we are new to JSR 168 and definitely interested in incorporating Ajax with most any channel we create, this seems like a useful guide.

Quote on Diversity

// January 10th, 2007 // No Comments » // My Stuff

“Diversity is all fine and good, except… to the extent to where… people don’t conform!”

In a moment of confusion and a lack of clarity in what he meant… a friend recently said the above. I’m certain he is not in fact opposed to diversity, but this quote makes for great harassment fodder.

Army of Darkness and Marvel Zombies Crossover

// January 8th, 2007 // 1 Comment » // My Stuff

Marvel Zombies/Army of DarknessSpinning out of the pages of Ultimate Fantastic Four, Marvel launched a highly successful Marvel Zombies limited series written by Robert Kirkman. The popularity of that series has lead Marvel into many new horror genre comics.

The most exiting of which is the Marvel Zombies/Army of Darkness crossover.

From the Marvel solicitation:

This is it true believers, the cross-over of the century begins here! The Marvel Zombies come face-to-face with Dynamite Entertainment’s Ash from the Army of Darkness! Ash has faced legions of the undead before, but never like this…as he lands in the heart of New York just as the Zombie outbreak begins! See how his actions help turn more heroes and villains into Zombies! Under the watchful eye of Marvel Zombie guru Robert Kirkman, this might just be the comic event of 2007! Plus: The entire series will feature classic “homage” covers from painter Arthur Suydam!

The five issue limited series begins in March. It will be written by John Layman and penciled by Fabiano Silva Neves.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer – Season 8!

Buffy Season 8

OK, so the title may be slightly misleading, but Joss Whedon has decided to realize all his visions for Season 8 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in comic format.

Here is the marketing summary about the book:

Since the destruction of the Hellmouth, the Slayers — newly legion — have gotten organized and are kicking some serious undead butt. But not everything’s fun and firearms, as an old enemy reappears and Dawn experiences some serious growing pains . . . Buffy creator Joss Whedon brings Buffy back to Dark Horse in this direct follow-up to season seven of the smash-hit TV series.

Quick facts about this exciting project:
– Published by Dark Horse Comics
– Begins in March 2007
– Will run 20-30 issues.
– Will be stretched over 2-3 years, coming out monthly
– All stories will be official series canon (unlike previous licensed Buffy/Angel comics)
– All major characters will be making appearances
– Joss has created an over arching story (big bad) that will guide the series
– Joss will write the first 4 issue, last four issues, and a smattering in between
– Major comic writers have been signed up to write including Brian K Vaughan
– Original series writers will be involved in issues
– 1800 slayers exist, with 500 actively fighting evil as a team with Buffy
Georges Jeanty is drawing the book, cover art by Jo Chen
– A comic book Season 9 is not ruled out!

In the TVGuide.com interview with Joss, the first five pages of issue 5 were revealed. I have compiled those into a CBZ file here for your enjoyment.

Mutant America Clothing

Magneto Was RightXavier Institute Shirt

I love tastefully done comic geekery clothing. Mutant America sells a few shirts all of which are very cool. The Marvel based designs include two Madrox shirts, a “Magneto was Right” shirt, and the Xavier Institute shirt (shown here). They also sell rings and pins, also tastefully designed.

I would be happy to comment on the quality of these items, if only I had some of them…

Wii Shop Channel Sucks Fix!

// January 1st, 2007 // 16 Comments » // My Stuff

Update: If you are experiencing problems like I outlined below, you can most likely resolve the issue by changing your wireless routers broadcast channel to 1. You do this by simply logging into your router (most likely at http://192.168.1.1) and going to the “Wireless” tab. Below is a screenshot.

Linksys Channel Selection

After making this change suddenly it became much more responsive and reliable. Not sure why this matters, but it makes a world of difference if you are suffering. A big thanks to Dan for the heads up on this.

Original story continues below…

No question about it, I love my Nintendo Wii. However, the biggest most glaring problem is with the Wii Shop Channel. This is the application Nintendo has built for purchasing virtual console games.

The primary problem is you can hardly ever get into the application. Apparently it makes some sort of connection across the internet to a service at Nintendo. Clearly that service has not been scaled and/or engineered properly. What is most amazing to me is that after 5 or 6 failed attempts, you may suddenly get in, then the shop is fairly responsive.

For awhile I thought maybe my wireless router was flaky, but when the Internet Channel was released I learned that getting online was pretty reliable. After struggling with the Shop, I always confirm it is working with the internet by surfing a few pages in Opera. This has been consistently responsive and quick to use.

Never wanting to complain without suggestions on how to make it suck less… here are a few things they could do in lieu of fixing the obvious scaling and efficiency isssue:

Timeout faster – I’m not sure what it spends it’s time determining, but I’ve waited as long as 10 minutes before it comes back and says it couldn’t connect. Seriously it should be able to know faster than that.

Cancel button – If you are going to make us wait, let us decide we’re tired of it and cancel out. This is especially frustrating on the third try or so when you finally decide, screw buying another VC game I just want to play!

Timeout properly – Twice just today I tried to go in the shop and even after multiple hours it still said connecting. Since there was no cancel button, I was a little afraid of having to push and hold the power button to reboot. Eventually I did and there was no problems, but still…

Queuing – If the service can’t handle the number of users and requests, time to start putting people in a queue. Make sure there is good feedback about this though, if I’m number 30,000 in the queue and estimated entry time is 3 hours, it would be nice to know.

So there it is Nintendo, I want to give you money. I want to buy games you have already sold me. I believe in the virtual console whole heartedly. Now it’s time for you to live up to your end of the bargain and provide a usable service that doesn’t suck.

I hope they can get this cleared up and that their online game play delivery is not launched in such a clunky manner.
