Ultimate Daredevil and Elektra

// August 20th, 2006 // 2 Comments » // My Stuff

Ultimate Daredevil and ElektraThe more I read in the Ultimate ‘verse the more I realize how truly top shelf everything about it seems to be. So far every Ultimate book I’ve read has been great, in some cases awakening interest in characters I previously had no attachment with. Having this in mind, I picked up Ultimate Daredevil and Elektra.

This series starts as a four part series. It is extremely character central. There is very little classic bang up super fight action scenes, but that’s a-ok with me. Especially good when the character development and dialog is as expertly composed as this. In many ways I think this title was targeted at female comic readers, I hope it was successful at this, because I’m certainly going to be making Sara read it…

Here’s the premise: Elektra is a freshman in college. She is the child of a single father who started her with karate lessons at a very young age. Elektra is strong willed and outspoken. Her character exudes strength and confidence. In all ways a great role model for girls (at least early on). She shows up to school, meets some great friends, including one mousy shy girl who she protects from some frat dude jerk. This is where all the problems start, establishing the core conflict of the series.

Later we meet Matt Murdock aka Daredevil. In all ways Daredevil is secondary to Elektra in the series. He and best friend Foggy Nelson are studying law. Murdock immediately becomes Elektra’s love interest.

As the Elektra and frat boy conflict heightens in extremity, eventually she and Daredevil find themselves as a decision point. He must make a choice between supporting her in an act of vengeance or saving the life of someone he does not like. Daredevil feels strongly that the legal system must be played out; Elektra has lost her faith in the law.

In addition to Greg Rucka’s fantasticly written morality centered action character drama, the art of Salvador Larroca is stunning. In fact, it was the recent Marvel Spotlight: Neil Gaiman/Salvador Larroca issue that raised my awareness of this book. I enjoyed reading his interview, but hadn’t read anything he penciled.

If you are interested in Daredevil, Elektra, the Ultimate ‘verse, or character driven story telling, this is a must read for you.

Uno – A Prettier, Unified OSX

// August 20th, 2006 // 1 Comment » // Technology Bits

UnoWithout a doubt I think Mac OS X is by far the most modern and attractive looking OS in existence. Seeing it side by side with Windows XP every day shows how far ahead it was. Imagine my surprise upon discovering Uno’s ability to make it even better.

Uno applies skins across many of the OSX applications, allowing you to replace the brushed metal look with more of the iTunes/iLife look. Matt has often complained about the brushed metal look, I have always been indifferent. Until now. Wow. Safari, iChat, Finder and more all have new life breathed into them by just simply replacing the brushed metal with gradients.

Install this application, you won’t be sorry.

Spider-Man Pewter Chess Set

// August 14th, 2006 // 5 Comments » // My Stuff

Spider-Man ChessSOTA Toys is releasing a $499 pewter Spider-Man themed chess set this August. I have to admit, the geek in me was intrigued… at first.

I really like the board itself. It’s themed like a rooftop in fairly ornate detail. This includes a non-flat surface creating a much more three dimensional and real experience. I was surprised to have not seen this idea sooner, it’s just brilliant.

The cast for pieces is good, at least on first glance:

Heroes
King: Spider-man (red & blue)
Queen: Symbiote Spider-man (black)
Knight: Punisher
Knight: Moon Knight
Bishop: Daredevil
Bishop: Black Cat
Rook: Cloak & Dagger
Rook: Blade
Pawn: Spider Tracer

Villains
King: Green Goblin
Queen: Doctor Octopus
Knight: Scorpion
Knight: Sandman
Bishop: Electro
Bishop: Lizard
Rook: Venom
Rook: Rhino
Pawn: Spider Slayer

This list is where I became frustrated. To begin with, why have both red & blue suit and black suit Spider-Man? What a terrible cop out. Let’s instead put Black Cat in that spot. Hell, if Spider-Man wasn’t also Peter Parker Black Cat would still be attached to Spidey. Alright, don’t like Black Cat? How about Spider-Girl? Or one of the three Spider-Woman characters? Surely any of these would be better. I’ve got no love for the clone-saga, but frankly I’d take Scarlet Spider over two Spider-Man’s on the chess board…

Next, what’s with Moon Knight?!? I suppose they fought alongside each other occasionally, but I’d much rather see Human Torch, Silver Sable, or even Firestar in this lineup. Cloak and Dagger seemed strange at first, until I realized they first appeared in a Spider-Man comic, leading me to accept them far more readily. The rest of the heroes are good choices.

On to the villains… this is a tough one. Spider-Man has one of the deepest rogue galleries of any super hero I’ve ever encountered. The ones chosen here are a solid list. At first I really wanted a female in the “Queen” slot, but as I poked around in my head, I couldn’t come up with an A-list (or even B-list) female villain for Spidey. Don’t get me wrong though, I’m not free of complaint when it comes to the villain list…

First off, we have Blade on the good side, but no Morbius on the bad? Who did Blade show up to fight? The dude kills vampires exclusively!

This lack of match-up has me concerned for Daredevil, Punisher, Black Cat, Cloak and Dagger, and Moon Knight. These guys all fight organized crime. That’s their shared niche and where Spidey teams up with this crew. Where are the major crime villains? Where’s Kingpin? Tombstone? Hammerhead? The Enforcers?

As I said before, there are a lot of villains, so I can understand them leaving some out. What I don’t get is why, knowing this, they would decide to make all the pawns the same? One or two unique spider-slayers is tolerable, but why not pull some other thugs up as pawns when you got all these other big names to choose from: Beetle, Chameleon, Carnage, Shocker, Hydro Man, Mysterio, Morbius, Man Wolf, Kraven the Hunter, Vulture, or Hobgoblin?

Back on the hero side, I’d love to see them use regular people, friends, and family as pawns instead of the lame spider tracers. For instance, take your pick from these: Mary Jane, J Jonah Jameson, Aunt May, Gwen Stacy, Betty Brant, Flash Thompson, Robbie Robertson, or Harry Osborn. Wouldn’t that be a lot more fun? Imagine having to sacrifice Gwen Stacy to take down the Green Goblin. It just begs to be setup this way!

In conclusion, with the stiff $499 price tag, they could have, should have, gone the extra mile to make this chess set irresistible to all fans. At this price they need to do something, their target market will all have similar complaints to mine… Save your money or buy more comics.

Google Strikes Back Against Click Fraud Claims

// August 9th, 2006 // No Comments » // Technology Bits

I have substantial experience with advertising tracking technologies including click fraud analysis. While working for Direct Response Technologies, I spent a year as the lead developer on their Direct Track product. We spent a substantial amount of time tracking and analyzing claims of click fraud, but in most cases our system identified fraudulent clicks properly, yet we still spent a fair amount of time double and triple checking the numbers with our many clients.

Google has it infinitely worse.

For months we’ve been hearing about problems with click fraud and many crazy numbers in relation to Google Adwords. As a Google AdSense publisher these complaints have scared me. Over the last six months my traffic has continued to increase, yet my ECPM and CTR numbers have declined drastically. I could only assume Google was bending to their paying Adwords customers and eliminating valid clicks while fear and anxiety on the advertisers’ part was reducing overall per click payouts. This trend has been fairly consistent amongst many of my friends, some have recently been seeing their ECPM dip below the $1.00 mark.

However, careful analysis from Google has been released that defies many of the claims of click fraud. In a 17 page white paper released on August 8th, Google shows clearly how these fraud numbers are misrepresented, trumped up, and just plain wrong. Many of the methodologies click fraud companies are using do not properly track numbers, nor verify their claims against what Google actually tracked. In one example given, AdWatcher claimed there were approximately 12,000 fraudulent clicks in a time period when Google only tracked 6800 and had already identified and eliminated 800 as fraud.

Hopefully this detailed report will get adequate press coverage and publishers can start seeing Google earnings start to increase to respectable levels again. It is my strong opinion that if you are not getting between $2 and $3 ECPM for real content, you are being screwed. It would be nice to feel good about my Google ads again and not be shopping around at Yahoo, Commission Junction, and Blog Ads.

Aquaman is Lame, TV Pilot is Not

// August 8th, 2006 // 1 Comment » // My Stuff

I was as surprised as you may be, but the Aquaman pilot for the show that is unlikely to ever be made was pretty good. It turns out I’m not alone in my opinion here as the Aquaman Pilot has hung around the top sales charts on iTunes for weeks. I think The CW is missing out on a potential hit. I’m left wondering how this show would be cancelled over 7th Heaven…

OK, now on to the Aquaman bashing that is almost too easy to take part in… When I found out my good friend Keith was a life long Aquaman fan, I decided I might as well dig up all the hilarity that is Aquaman bashing.

First of all is Seanbaby.com’s profile on Aquaman as a member of The Super Friends. Here are a few tidbits from this must read page:

Aqua Man does things like send a school of little fish against a submarine. There are rare times when he remembers he can call something tough like a whale or a shark — usually when they’re in some freshwater lake or a swimming pool. And you don’t have to be a marine biologist to know that’s fucked up.

Plus, Aquaman forgets he has powers all the time. He’ll be going for a swim, and for no reason, a disgruntled octopus will try to kill him. I guess they hate him as much as we do.

When they first formed the Super Friends, they had a good time making office pools on how long it would take until they had to rescue Aquaman again. Now it’s just part of the day’s scheduled events. Their day goes breakfast, arts and crafts, Earth Science, Batman’s Bat-Tips, Lunch, free time, rescue Aquaman, lecture Aquaman, crisis prevention, song practice, rescue Aquaman, punch Aquaman, dinner.

OK, if you enjoyed any of those quips, go read the whole thing, it rules.

Even Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim got in on using Aquaman as the butt of their jokes, check out these two quick clips on YouTube [1] & [2].
Aquaman
Finally, I remembered this fantastic clip from the under appreciated Dr Katz series. In this one a guy is talking with Dr. Katz about how lame it would be to have Aquaman’s limited powers. Classic.

OK, that’s enough, if Keith stumbled upon this he may be tearing by this point so I should let up, cause we all know if his brothers find this he’ll never live it down. Maybe I’ll look up Hawkman parodies next…
