Civil War Podcasts

CGS ImageIf you’ve been following Civil War, like me you probably need some sort of fix to help between issues. Thankfully Marvel and Comic Geek Speak have put out a pile of fantastic podcasts. One of the primary reasons I blog about comics is to achieve a sense of discussion and community. These podcasts allow you to think about the comics you are reading and at least hear some discussion about the characters.

Here are links to the current Civil War related podcasts. Most of these are really great.

Real Life Daredevil – Ben Underwood

// July 27th, 2006 // 11 Comments » // My Stuff

Ben Underwood

People recently reported on “The Boy Who Sees With Sound”. They compared him to dolphins and bats, but they missed the most obvious comparison… The is clearly a real life Daredevil!

OK, so he doesn’t have the cool red costume, he’s not a lawyer and he doesn’t appear to have an affinity for gymnastics, but other than that this kid is so entirely Daredevil.

The article describes how 14 year old Ben Underwood tragically lost his eyes to cancer at age 3. This barely slowed Underwood down. He learned at a young age how to make clicking sounds and hear where things are around him. His highly developed echolocation ability allows him to play baskeball, ride horses, roller blade, and even excel at PlayStation games! His ability is developed to the point where he can hear the difference between a truck and a car in a parking lot.

I’m telling you, if this kid decides to take up acrobatics he could totally become a costumed vigilante fighting for the justice of underdogs.

New Improved Bsuite! Or Not…

// July 24th, 2006 // 5 Comments » // Technology Bits

Casey released bsuite b2v6 today. This is a fantastic plugin for WordPress which does a lot of heavy lifting and can help to better leverage the long tail of your content. Frankly I wouldn’t run WordPress without it. This bug fix release clears up a lot of little nagging problems, including some substantial performance improvements. Best of all is the “Top Movers” section that will show you stories that are performing better than they usually do. This is an indicator of stories that have somehow become hot.

OK, now for the downside, at least from my perspective… Over the last pile of months running Bsuite I had rolled a few of my own modifications and enhancements. I’ve started rolling these back in, it’s a work in progress. You can grab my slightly modified version with this functionality added back in, I’m affectionately calling it bsuite b2v6z. The ‘z’ on the end indicates you are running my tweaked version. As Casey rolls out new versions I’ll try to stay on top of things and release this derivative work out to the happy masses! With each release, hopefully I can continue to get Casey to roll in some of my changes.

For anyone wondering why I’d bother doing this, well…
1) I’m not the kind of guy who runs anything “baseline”
2) Casey can be slow about new releases so I might as well do it then worry about convincing him later
3) It is GPL’d so I can!

Spider-Man 3: Sandman Poster

Sanman Poster
This is the Sandman poster from ComiCon in San Diego. By far my favorite of all the posters we’ve seen so far. It almost looks like he’s protecting the girl standing by his side with a teddy bear. I’ve heard some rumors that this girl is his daughter?

Spider-Man 3: Venom First Look

Spider-Man 3: Venom

Here it is, the first image of Venom from the upcoming Spider-Man 3. It was released as a wallpaper on the official site. There is also another great wallpaper of Peter ripping open his shirt to reveal the black suit underneath.

The Venom shot is clearly Eddie Brock (Topher Grace) and not Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire). This image also shows him with really sharp teeth as we would expect Venom to be. In the background it appears the setting is a church. I would assume this scene is occurring just after Peter fights off the symbiote as shown in the trailer.

On another quick note, I’m very excited about the Spider-Man 3 movie blog they have created. Hopefully it is used well for intimate looks behind the scenes or direct communication with actors, directors, etc.

Defense of the Ancients (DotA) Allstars Items and Recipes

DotA Allstars 6.35 Item ChartDefense of the Ancients (DotA) Allstars is a Warcraft III mod that is insanely popular and equally fun. Currently this happens to be the only online game I play. DotA Allstars, or just DotA, is a mod so popular and well put together that Blizzard has recognized it and even hosted tournaments at BlizzCon!

One of the key things to being successful at playing DotA is constructing the right items in the right situations. In game there isn’t a ton of time to spend agonizing over what to build. DotA Allstars 6.35 Item Table Luckily, there are a ton of great items lists you can check out or print and use during the game. This should help you to come up with the best possible builds in all kinds of situations.

The most interesting guides I’ve seen are these two images from “thenonhacker”:
DotA Allstars 6.35 Item Table and DotA Allstars 6.35 Item Chart. These are the images I have thumbnails of on the left. The item chart shows visually what items lead to what other items. The item table categorizes each item and shows in chart form exactly what benefits each will provide.

On the official DotA site there are three must see pages:

An interactive one page listing of all the items by shop.

A basic item list for printing.

A recipe item list which can be printed in either HTML or PDF.

Note these links and this information was updated as of DotA version 6.34/6.35b

Heroes Trailer for Nintendo Wii

// July 23rd, 2006 // 1 Comment » // My Stuff

This is the trailer for the upcoming game Heroes for the Nintendo Wii. The game studio who created this is the same that created Killer 7. The visual style is similar, and that is to say really artsy, but all kinds of cool. I’m not 100% certain what type of game this is, (fighter? action/adventure?), but it looks very graphic and definitely in the mature category.

Add one more to the list of games I’m eagerly anticipating for the big N’s next generation console…
